After Telus blocked ports without notice my office/enhanced ADSL connection this past weekend incoming ports and blocking my access to my development web-server (I am out of town at present), and having to upgrade to their Server 2.5 static IP connection, and reading various thoughts about this new policy of blocking certain ports (detailed below) I (and hopefully you guys) want to know about your broadband connection to see how things around the world. If you could answer the following questions, it will help everyone see how broadband access varies around the world. I might even make this into a database on my site (you will have to do it all over again) and show the combined results for us all to drool over people's connections or brag about our own connection. I am doing this out of curiously and won't be giving these results to any company or people/persons.

Here are the ports that Telus is now blocking:
  • Incoming
  • [B]TCP 21[/B} (ftp)
  • TCP 25 (smtp)
  • TCP 80 (www)
  • TCP 110 (pop3)
  • TCP 6667 (ircd)
  • TCP/UDP 135-139 (dcom and netbios)
  • TCP/UDP 1433-1434 (ms-sql)

    Outgoing
  • TCP 25 (smtp) everyone is restricted to using Telus's SMTP server, with 4MB attachment limi, but the freedom to use any from e-mail address as long as your within Telus's IP block range when using their SMTP server.
  • Where do you live (City, State/province/country)?
  • Who is your broadband provider?
  • How long have you had broadband Internet?
  • What type of connection you have (xDSL, Cable, Fiber, wireless, satellite, etc)?
  • How much do you pay each month?
  • Is your IP Dynamic or static?
  • What is your download speed?
  • What is your upload speed?
  • What is your bandwidth limit?
  • How much do you get charged for going over your limit?
  • Does your ISP block any incoming ports?
  • If yes, what ports are blocked?
  • Does your ISP block any outgoing ports?
  • If yes, what ports are blocked?
  • Are you restricted to your ISP's SMTP server?
  • Are there any other Internet services you are restricted to by your ISP (Example: only their news server)?
  • Are you allowed a router to connect multiple computers using one IP?
  • Does your ISP charge extra for having a router, and multiple computers using the same IP?
  • Do you run servers off of your connection (for public access or development purposes?
  • Does your ISP allow servers hosted on your premisis?
  • Does your ISP let you choose your own host-name to be identified by?

If you have any more idea's for questions etc, post them and I will add them to this post.

    Hell yeah, Communication of Knowledge.
  • Does your ISP allow servers hosted on your premisis?
    Well, they haven't stopped me.

We currently have a Westell DSL modem, it does a fine job with DHCP and all but its port forwarding is lacking. Right now I have a few ports forwarded to my G3 and one to my PC, when I try forwarding another port to my G4, it basically disconnects my G4 from the internet. All the other machines are doing fine, but the G4 is no go. Sort of a bummer, if your trying to run multiple servers.

CNC (China Network Company, I think)
  • What type of connection you have (xDSL, Cable, Fiber, wireless, satellite, etc)?

  • How much do you pay each month?
    RMB 120 (USD 14.49)
  • Is your IP Dynamic or static?
Dynamic, and limited to one IP address (ie. switch no workie)

No, my ISP does not offer an SMTP server.
  • Are there any other Internet services you are restricted to by your ISP (Example: only their news server)?
Not exactly, but there are quite a lot of sites that I cannot access due to censorship (more of a restriction from internet services than to internet services, but I couldn't find a better place to put it)
  • Are you allowed a router to connect multiple computers using one IP?
Yes, as far as I know
  • Does your ISP charge extra for having a router, and multiple computers using the same IP?
    Not that I know of
  • Do you run servers off of your connection (for public access or development purposes?
No, that would be cruelty to the visitors.
  • Does your ISP allow servers hosted on your premisis?
I have absolutely no idea. I can't see how they could stop me, though, from having the server on my premises per se, though they could of course object to the server being run off their connection.
  • Does your ISP let you choose your own host-name to be identified by?
Maybe I'm being dumb, but I don't know what you mean here...

Wow, that sounds neat...

*note to self: Find residence somewhere around Bryggen when returning to KUA - shouldn't be hard to find student lodgings on Amager at all*

Well if the event "returning to KUA" is happening really really soon then I actually have a room I am about to rent out

I belong the the social science faculty so I rarely visit KUA. Do you know if the notice boards in the corridors are used by people looking for accommodation?

Only in certain places, and pretty much only in Copenhagen, as far as I know (in Denmark, that is). A year ago, we paid 40 ($50) for 2 Mbit where I lived - I doubt very much the average prices have dropped that much in such a short time (though I'd be extremely pleased if they had).

I ordered a 5MBit modem from the Rogers site a couple of days before their print ads went out, end of May. Still no sight of the damn thing!

I have the same contract and have also had broadband since 2000.

It's worth noting that the 61 flat fee includes ISDN, two hours local phone calls, one hour long-distance, and free phone calls to other Hansenet members.

also, the service was 2Mbps/192kbps until about six months ago - then they bumped it first to 2.4Mbit, and again to 3Mbit. At no extra cost.

I didn't even know until I started getting >300KB/sec downloads.

No ADSL is still the rule of the day and even if prices are dropping it doesnt happen that fast.

The only reason why we get it that cheap is because we wired the enitre neighbourhood (0.5 square mile) for internet, telephone and TV/radio, bought routers, telephone systems etc. so we own our own infrastructure. So now we are one HUGE customer for the telcom whole sellers that only need to deliver one mother****ing huge badass connection, X numbers of ISDN lines and TV/radio signal to one point.

And sorry. I need the rent out the room from one week ago. But if it goesto an exchange student that leaves in december Ill contack you.

  • Where do you live (City, State/province/country)?
    West Des Moines, IA
  • Who is your broadband provider?
Vision Systems, LLC in conjunction with Sun Prairie Apartments
  • How long have you had broadband Internet?
Through them - since July '03
  • What type of connection you have (xDSL, Cable, Fiber, wireless, satellite, etc)?
    Cable
  • How much do you pay each month?
Well, it's for both high-speed and for my expanded Cable TV, and they have a deal through my apartment complex for reduced rates. But I pay ~$45/month for expanded cable TV and broadband ($45 for the whole deal, not $45 each).
  • Is your IP Dynamic or static?
Dynamic, but I haven't seen it change yet, and even if it does, I get my DNS from http://www.zoneedit.com and have an app on my server update that service with my current IP address every 20 minutes, so even if it did change, my site wouldn't notice.
  • What is your download speed?
    1 Mbit/sec
  • What is your upload speed?
~384 Kbit/sec, I think (not sure, it could be 256 Kbit/sec, but it's fast enough, whatever it is).
  • What is your bandwidth limit?
    None
  • How much do you get charged for going over your limit?
    N/A
  • Does your ISP block any incoming ports?
    Nope
  • If yes, what ports are blocked?
  • Does your ISP block any outgoing ports?
    Nope
  • If yes, what ports are blocked?
  • Are you restricted to your ISP's SMTP server?
    Nope.
  • Are there any other Internet services you are restricted to by your ISP (Example: only their news server)?
Nope. It's kind of a mom-and-pop company, so I doubt they'd know how, even if they wanted to.
  • Are you allowed a router to connect multiple computers using one IP?
    Hope so!
  • Does your ISP charge extra for having a router, and multiple computers using the same IP?
    Not that I know of.
  • Do you run servers off of your connection (for public access or development purposes?)
    Yes.
  • Does your ISP allow servers hosted on your premises?
I assume so. It's my bandwidth, so I don't see why they'd get to tell me what I can and cannot do with it.
  • Does your ISP let you choose your own host-name to be identified by?
Well, they assigned their own DNS name to my IP, but I also assigned one myself (using ZoneEdit.com). So my IP just has two domain names. Not a big deal.
