Huh? I see eight screenshots taken from a big projection. Which one has a genie effect?

I don't think so. It's not a screenshot but a photograph of the screen, the perspecitve is wierd and makes it look like the start menu has a genie effect.

Yeah, it's just a photo taken at a bad angle. Look more closely.

There's no Genie effect here, just perspective.

Hi!

I think screenshot No.6 (third in the right column) is a good example of a bad use of transparency. It's even hard to tell how many windows there are on that picture.

LOL. This is true, remember how OSX used to utilize the Quartz engine to do transparency at the beginning, by using it all the time?

Jeez, Microsoft really is at the same point in time as Puma.....

If you look at the text, the angles of the straight lines (the "t" in "Start" and the "d" in "Arvind") don't match up between the bar and the Start menu — the D is about 15 degrees more to the right. So either it's a genie effect or the screen is actually bent in the middle rather than tilted.

Check this out... maybe this is the name of that FX: "Aero"

Aero: A user experience that creates a connection
Published: July 27, 2005
Aero, the code name for the user experience in Windows Vista and the collection of APIs that realize it, represents a new design philosophy that delivers a compelling user experience from the moment users start interacting with the computer to the moment they leave. For developers, Aero provides a number of APIs that let them extend their applications to integrate with this new design philosophy. Developers can manipulate the desktop window manager, window chrome, and UI controls. Additionally, Aero is exposed through themes, layouts, and styling as well as through the native Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly code named Avalon) controls.
The Aero philosophy is not only to deliver a user experience that feels great but also to fundamentally change the way usability is measured. In the past, Windows focused heavily on usability as defined by such metrics as discoverability, time to task, and task completion. Aero continues to deliver on these metrics, but it will also enable Windows Vista and WinFX applications to generate a positive connection with users on first sight, on first use, and over the long term.

It looks interesting and maybe make the appearance more bearable this time around. Has that 'Dark Tiger' theme going on.

They're nuts if they don't. Why shortchange your users just because somebody else came up with a good idea first?
