Cool article on some spiffy observations of Andromeda. It has been previously theorized that super massive black holes could be at the center of many galaxies and even a few weird solar systems. But, until now, it was just as possible that at the center was just a huge collection of stars.
Hubble was able to pick up two separte rings of stars near the center of Adromeda. This is totally weird becuase the inner ring closer to the center is made up of young, blue stars. The outer ring is comopsed of older red stars. What's also weird is that despite the age difference in the stars, the two rings are still no the same plane (probably due to massive elctromagnetic waves, but it takes a lot of time for objects of that mass to "settle in.") Even more intriguing is that the rings appear to be only 1/10th the age of the galaxy. They've only been there for a few million years while the galaxy itself has been there for billions. So how'd they get there?
So while that created a new mystery, the discovery of the rings did provide an opportunity to calculate the mass of the center.
This came to be about 140 million times the mass of our sun. Pretty strong evidence for a black hole at the center of a galaxy.
Here's a nifty video .
