I want some kind of widget or application (freeware if possible) that I can use to record what I do with my mac. I am trying to create instructional videos on how to use macintosh computers. Any suggestions? I also need something that can produce a good quality video, and not be apparent in the video (such as a dock icon or open window).

Sounds like Snapz Pro is what you need.

The new Snow Leopard appears to do just that in most part.

I haven't either. I considered making a free one when 10.5 came out and made screencapture really easy, but I couldn't get the cursor to show up and that seemed pretty essential to this sort of tool.

It would seem somewhat pointless to spend time on such a thing at this point, if it is indeed true that Snow Leopard will have it built-in.

I really just meant that to say that it seems like it should be easy, but it's actually not so much. Any free solution would probably be unsatisfactory in some way.
I think it will take somebody with a bit more time and a lot more interest in the subject than I have to make a good freeware version of this. Freeware is a work of either necessity or love, and honestly I don't love screencapture that much, and Snapz Pro is cheap enough that I don't really feel a driving need for an inferior program that's free.

Then get Snapz. Not everything in life is free.
If you want something cheaper, there's this, which is only $16. However, it's not as good.

Click the link I provided above. It provides a rundown on Snapz' features, and also a link to a free trial version you can download and try to see if you like it.

iShowU works very well and with $20 it's much cheaper than SnapzPro.

For the purpose, Screenflow is unbeatable. Snapz and iShowU merely record what you are doing, but if you want to show people what you are doing and highlight your workflow then Screenflow is leaps and bounds ahead of the others for this. It isn't cheap though.

ScreenFlow is the cream of the crop and I think it's probably the only one that won't find its market particularly diminished by Snow Leopard. But if you think Snapz Pro is pricy, ScreenFlow will make you cry.

Btw it may be unnecessary for you to reinvent the wheel - take a look at www.screencastsonline.com and the type of video you intend to make could already be available.

It's $99 so probably. But in terms of time saved etc. the extra $30 to $50 could be worth it.

Btw, iShowU is much better value than Snapz if you opt for one of those two. Snapz doesn't offer much that is worth the extra cost.

I looked at that URL. I actually want to create DVD's to sell. Who knows, I could end up getting involved with Apple!

With Apple? They basically do everything in-house, save for ads. They don't even hire actors for tutorial videos any more -- they use (extremely talented) employees from the retail stores for them.
