When is "late summer" going to arrive so we can all enjoy the glory of MMS on the iPhone here in the US ?
It is pretty sad that AT&T has not rolled out this to the US iPhone folks. I mean you could buy a really cheap-junk camera phone and still send pics over text mgs, but not if you buy the top of the linephone we offer....
Sorry for the rant, i love my iPhone, it is a great device, but come-on ! i want to send pics to my friend and share contacts, etc !
WHEN ???

Even when it becomes available I can bet it will crash ATT's system..they just suck... lets go Verizon! Only 4 months to go on AT&T

Uh, you do realize that you can email a picture to a cell phone, right? It doesn't have to be a smartphone for it to work, either - the receiving phone just has to support MMS.

Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

And you have to know what carrier it's on, so you can convert the phone number to an e-mail address properly.

It's not so much that I want to send MMS, it's the dumb ass process I have to go through when I receive a MMS from another person. Even with copy and paste, which I had hoped when improve the experience (it didn't), AT&T sucks.
4 out of 5 times the password/user name combo fails.

This only works for US recipients and some (but not all) international recipients. This past week I've had dozens of SMS that I've sent to int'l recipients and wished that ATT had their act together. I can send the email to [email protected] and so on, but there's no assurance that it works for all carriers, even if you can figure out the texting subdomain required.

If I get it right, MMS is already available on AT&T for "regular" phone, but they won't allow it on iPhones? I don't understand how iPhones would overwhelm the network more than any other phone?

iPhones can create and have access to a much larger range of media and can potentially put TONS of stuff into a message. I do think lots of people using iPhones would overwhelm the MMS system, at least in the immediate period around when MMS becomes available.

Can they really? I thought an MMS had a pre-defined and limited scope of content similar to the way it's done with SMS.
I have the feeling it was more about AT&T being worried about the huge number of iPhones and the fact that the average iPhone user is likely to send/receive a lot more than your average mom with her el-cheapo phone. Just my guess of course.

My understanding is that, while "limited," it's still way, way more varied than SMS supports, and many of the "MMS only" options can take a very large amount of data. Plus I haven't found a "max message content size" limitation in my admittedly brief research on the subject. Video attachments could turn what might have been two smileys in an SMS message into several megabytes.

It's here, officially. Got the text from AT&T today. Plug in, go to iTunes, and it will tell you there is a carrier update. Update, then restart your phone.

Yeah, I got that text as well. It looks like the cost is the same as for regular text messages too-$20/$15/$5/20¢ for unlimited/1500 per month, 200 per month and each, respectively, according to this AT&T Wireless page.

I've used mms messaging on numerous cell phones over the years and I find that Apple's way is easier. Not that I'm a fanboy, but I find it easier and more seamless to use.

A Verizon iPhone makes sense. That way if you get fed up with Verizon, you can not use your iPhone with someone else. That's way better.

Not to mention the horrible crippling of phone features that they are known for.

A coworker had problems with the MMS update on her 3G. She hadn't yet updated her OS to 3.1 and tried to do the whole thing at one time. Her phone apparently required TWO restarts before the MMS carrier update took. Kind of odd to me, but maybe this will be helpful to others who aren't seeing the MMS showing up.
