How does one connect from a VHS player with 3 RCA (L, R, Video) and an S-Video output into a computer to convert an old tape into a DVD format?

S video is output only AFAIK.

If you have a DV cam, they will sometimes accept the RCA yellow/red/black via a single audio/video input cable (going from three plugs to one). Output from VCR to dv cam then 'record' the feed. This is stored on the DV cam's tape and you can then oputput to your computer.

Stand-alone converters are also inexpensive, maybe $100.

The easiest way to do it is to get an analog-to-DV converter like this one:

http://www.adstech.com/products/API-...id=API-557-EFS

Just connect your VHS deck to the converter, plug the converter into your FireWire port, start recording in iMovie, and start playing the VHS tape. Voilà.

Note, of course, that this requires a Mac with FireWire, which until recently was standard on every Mac, but which looks like it might become more rare in the future, so your next Mac might not be able to convert from analog anymore (your MBP will work, though).

I guess it's fairly safe to assume such inexpensive video digitizers will quickly move to USB.

They already are available in USB... but not Mac-compatible (at least as far as I could find).

I was referring more to the fact that if you need to get a digitizer now, it may not work in the future.

You could just get an elgato EyeTV hybrid USB TV tuner stick and plug the VCR's antenna output into that to record it.

That's an interesting idea. Is iMovie able to import video from an EyeTV Hybrid, or if not, does the EyeTV software have a way to save the video stream in some format that iMovie will be able to import?

Also, could the latency issue that prevents most real-time camcorders from using USB be a problem? Or would it not matter since the VHS source is fairly low quality to begin with?

You can export from the EyeTV to any format, including DV.

That might be a good idea then. Not as easy-to-use as just importing straight into iMovie via the DV converter, but perhaps more future-proof (as long as the lack of FW's low latency doesn't become an issue).
