In the past few weeks I have seen highly annoying FLASH based strobing banner ads here on MacNN.

This isn't even the worst of em:

This is what some link to:

hi,

I will remove all of these. Please copy the click-thru link (using the contextual menu: conrol + click). This allows us to identify the network and ban the ad (and advertiser).

best,
monish

Seems those banners are still up. I can't give you the link like you ask as they are flash based but they link here:

That ad is back. Also there is another similar one, a flash animation saying "YOU WON!"

Thanks for alerting us to this.

Please copy the link from the browser by control+clicking on the banner and using 'copy destination address' or 'copy link address'. It is the easiest way for us to track it down and ban the advertiser, as we work with several networks.

Feel free to send me a PM or email me directly.

I am looking to see which network has these.

Lando: unless you feel like you will click on some of those ads, why don't you install an ad blocker?

Because they don't block flash animations and I feel the blockers slow down loading more than the ads themselves do.

Anywho, the ads are back.

Camino has a good ad blocker built it. I also have it set to play animations only once. between those, ads have gotten alot less annoying, and this is running on an iMac DV (G3-333Mhz). If the ad blocker in Camino slowed things down significantly, I would know.

There was a site that benchmarked them all and it showed that Firefox is fantastic on Windows but for Mac it is just a port and the interface is non-mac like. worst of all the rendering engine is slow on a Mac.

Sh!t, if MacNN could only block Flash ads period, that would be great.
But all the ad money would go down the drain....

As I have mentioned several times in this thread I cannot control click the banner to get the link because it is flash.

I have posted the click though link also:

And this:

My eeeeyyyeesss!

I disabled SafariPlus (which filters out flash ads) to watch something on YouTube.

Man, your not kidding about seizure-inducing.

Seriously though, a photosensitive epileptic could be set off by these adds.

Alright what else needs to be done here? I mean I posted multiple links a month ago and there are still here today. They all link to the same site and are all hosed by network.realmedia.com/RealMedia/ads

They are back. WTF ?

Can't get the click-through link, because of the stupid ad-blocker in IE on my work PC.
If I set it on temporarily allow pop-ups, it reloads the site and the ad is gone.

Are these really necessary? I mean if someone was epileptic, they might be suing this company by now. There is no need for these types of ads to even exist imho.

Well, I do believe mkbhatia is doing they're best to track it down, but it sounds like one of the companies may be a little sly about this entire deal.

Consider the kind of ads these are-how "reliable" are the firms that advertise with this crap? Of course they're not going to be terribly cooperative because they're getting money for it. But mkbhatia IS working hard on the business end of things. What I find worst about all of these nasty ads is that this is obviously a Mac-oriented domain, and yet all the crappy ads are Windows-oriented. It's just STUPID to spen ad dollars on a product that doesn't line up with the known customer desires.

It's just too bad you can't just selectively disable Flash or any other plugin on a page-by-page (not website-by-website) basis.

And have you guys tried looking at your browser's "View Page Source" function...? Sure I know some of you can't decipher html, but some of it should look at least familiar (the 'embedded' Flash source....).

EDIT: actually, i just did that on my side and lookie what i got....

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
Ads_kid=0;Ads_bid=0;Ads_xl=728;Ads_yl=90;Ads_xp='' ;Ads_yp='';Ads_xp1='';Ads_yp1='';Ads_opt=0;Ads_wrd ='[KeyWord]';Ads_par='';Ads_cnturl='';

</script> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="http://a.as-us.falkag.net/dat/cjf/00/16/32/57.js"></script>
It's actually a piece of JavaScript that's calling up instructions from another server to request the embeded .SWF (flash) file.

In this case, it should be a simple matter of having the admins delete that section of code from all the forum pages (and of course finding some other way of getting $$$-funding-$$$ to run the forums banner-free).

The multitude of irritating adds splattered all over Macnn in recent weeks are not just annoying, they are eating up all my CPU oomph and bogging my Macs down hugely. (I did make a separate post about this a week or 2 ago, but it seems to have 'vanished')

The adds are localised however, and im seeing UK based companies advertising, so maybe the adds I get are more of a problem than American ones for example.
But they are literally crippling the Macnn website, and even the entire browser and computer as a whole. Its been like this for a few weeks now, and nothing has improved since.
They will max out my 1ghz G4 powerbook, and even my G5 iMac. What use is a mac website if it cripples a mac by using it?? Its absurd. I could use pithelmet and block the adds, but I find it causes as many problems as it cures. Plus I expect Macnn sponsors would prefer that adds were not blocked.

Something has to be done soon, or folks are going to be flocking to alternative Mac sites in their droves. And I expect sponsors would not want that any more than the Macnn admins do.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.
