Hey guys,
Check this - I think its the image of the new iPod DV!!
I think it is; or at least I needed a moment of down time, and whipped up this mockup for kicks after reading rumors of such a device.
Anyways - just thought I show you guys my impression

dude, along with the iPod DV, Apple are about to announce their acquisition of BlueSky. Hence the Ice Age 2 Promo
Looks like the guys over at engaget had a similar line of thought. You would think it must look something like the above taking into consideration the patent sketches. But who knows what the actual unit will look like, its hard to predict.
If I was to have come up with a concept of the iPod Hi-Fi, it would have been.. well nothing remotely like the actual product released. The Hi-Fi is not as aesthetically pleasing as Apple's other industrial designs imo.
And cheers for the psd kudos guys!

1) Poor Photoshop job
2) The screen won't extend so close to the edges or curved
3. Apple has licensed technology that allows 3D effects and real time transitions that make that image look like a poo

Um, he said it himself that this was a PS'ed mockup, so what's your point?

It would be fantastic to see the new iPod with 3D effects and real time transitions!
It looks as though everyone agrees that the mockup screen, should not have such accented rounded corners. I kinda agree now that you guys mention it.
I would like to see the new iPod screen cover the whole unit. maybe a little hard from an engineering stand point, but it would look cool
Maybe like this,

Other than Movies being capitalized and the i and P being too tightly kerned, what gave it away?
Could it have been when he stated in the original post that he Photoshopped it?

Cool factor? I mean, this looks really great on the Web. But in practice? I don't know.
I think the fact that Apple allowed to have a product that would get smudged from the get go, allows people to imagine a smudgier-prone product.
People's imagination is rarely discriminating from the start, and rather quite selective.

Kinda awkward to use it to control the interface if it's on the back. Just imagine the current iPod with scroll wheel on the back; selecting songs, adjusting volume? Be kinda tricky if you hafta keep flipping it over.

The most appropriate approach would be to straighten out that click wheel into a horizontal fingerbar.

KINDA awkward??? It would get laughed off the market.
Even a scroll wheel on the side isn't very apple.
Question. If this thing can be used in both wide and portrait mode how will it tell what orientation you have it in to make the scroll wheel with Menu on the top?

Regarding the scroll wheel on the front; they way I imagine it the movie would remain full screen when playing a flick, without any UI features at all.
However when the user touches any part of the front panel, (obviously without hold on) the scroll wheel and information would fade in and remain in a slight transparent state until the user has finished making adjustments.

I think that goes without saying. At least I hope it does.

That sir, is a good question.
A question that i am at a loss for. Maybe when playing a movie it would automagically switch to landscape?

There ARE electronic circuits that can tell. It's basically a kind of compass sensor, measuring the earth's magnetic field. I'm not sure if it's cost effective to built that in though

Fine, but what about movies that are in 4:3?
What about if you want to use it in landscape mode for music?

Wouldn't work. What if your iPod is stitting on the table, who knows what side of the table you are standing on.
The Xbox 360 has one of these built in to tell if the unit is standing or laying down. It is a ball that rolls from one side to the other depending.

It's NOT the iPods job to determine that. It's NOT meant to detect if you hold it upside down either. Duh !

Why solution ?
I have offered a technical feasable solution for determining if you hold it in landscape or portrait, but the general direction has to be correct. As for laying down flat: why not keep the same orientation that it had before you put it down ?

your technical solution wouldn't work either. iPods are about portability. Can you imagine, walking, jogging or driving and having a sensor determine what position it is in? The thing would go ape-**** every 2 seconds.
The newton let you put it in Landscape or portrait mode but it was only selectable with an onscreen command. I assume Apple would have to do the same thing.

I think the whole idea of having a touch sensitive screen is silly. It is just as silly as a touch sensitive keyboard (yes, they tried them). It doesn't give the user any tactile feedback. It's fine with the scroll wheel on the current iPod... as they added sound to provide feedback, but I think if EVERYTHING was that way, it wouldn't work for many users.
