I don't like tech mags because they're out of date by the time you get them. Just find a couple of good RSS feeds to keep up with and you'll hear about everything as it happens.

Macworld is a rag these days -- the articles are clearly biased, and the editorial team takes no criticism. Despite it billing itself as "the Mac authority", its articles have frequent errors, too.

The best Mac magazine I've found is MacUP, from Germany. Of course, it's of little use if you don't read German!

Just because someone can read something doesn't mean they understand it.

geez, tooki...you always have to be so german!

The best german mac magazine is still c't.

I don't read macworld so much for the news as much as I read the articles, learn about new apps, and enjoy the pretty pictures.

But Macworld hardly has useful articles any more, and what articles they do have tend to have errors, and the product reviews are often blatantly biased.

c't is really a magazine with a different focus, though. It's not of much use to the average Mac user, where MacUP is.

I remember some great reviews for the Pismo and the first TiBook by Andrew Gore.
Since then the quality has indeed gone down the drain.

Yes, I also miss Jim Heid, David Pogue, Guy Kawasaki… they were really fun to read.

All of us can support the Mac magazine community by joining a Macintosh User Group (MUG) and quailify for preferred subscription rates. You never know when a single idea gained will justify the subscription. Some of us like the immediacy of the internet, but there is no substitute for a magazine to hold and carry to places more comfortable and convenient. Don't bicker about prices for multiple subscriptions. We waste more money for lesser and fewer quality items all the time. Right? Don't forget to also visit The Mugcenter and listen to Chuck Joiner's podcasts MacVoices and MacNotables.

I'd say any magazine except Macworld.

[/ALLKIDDINGASIDE] I don't subscribe to computer magazines of any kind. They are an environmental waste as the info inside is useless after a year or so and are difficult to recycle. I have usually read any info in them the month before somewhere else.

Mr Railroader:

I don't understand your rationale for not subscribing, except to save print. All news becomes dated. Magazine editors provide a valueable service sifting through all the internet noise to save us some time. It's obvious from your significant contribution to this site you're very interested in what's happening on and with the Mac platform. Oh well, my 2 cents worth.

Mr. Benton,

Almost all magazines provide their magazine content on their web pages before they print onto environmentally unsound paper and mail them in trucks using fossil fuels to your domicile.

My contribution is a mere infinitesimally small "psst" in the noise of the internet.

I have a subscription to Macworld. I always find at least 1 good trick in it that makes that issue with it. I picked up MacAddict at Borders the other day.... I think they're design went downhill. The entire layout needs a redesign.

So thumbs up to Macworld here.

Webscreamer;

The bookstand price plus maybe another $6 would provide a year of home delivery without/cd. I really am trying to help you save money!

I stopped subscribing to any magazine. When I have time to read something, I go in a shop and browse through a bunch of the most interesting magazines. I buy the one that has the best stories. Mac magazines are very rarely among my choice because their spectrum is so limited and thus boring.

I want to be informed about whats going on. But most of the time the Mac magazines tell me what I already know. This is the reason why I mentioned german c't. Thats a computer magazine. They report about everything (including macs) and bring the whole stuff into the right perspective.

If I read a Mac magazine and find a test of lcd screens, the apple cinema display wins the competition. If I read c't, competitors look much better. If I read a mac magazine, the G5 is the fastest chip on earth. Now even apple claims the core duo is 4 times as fast (and thus the pentium m must have been at least comparable - maybe 2 times as fast).
Something is wrong and extremely biased in the world of mac-only reports.
As long as it stays like that, they don't get my money.

Seconded! The last time i bought a Mac mag. was about two years ago. There was a comparison of different TFT screens and they didn´t even mention the physical screen resolution

It's been a long time since I looked for any US Mac magazine on retail shelves. Don't MacAddict and Macworld come with a cd enclosed which necessitates a plastic wrap. I never found MacHome at retail. So which magazines are Dr.Michael and euphras referring to? Are they opening the plastic wrap? Retail sales are pricey in the $5 to $7 range when compared to the subscription rates. MUG membership entitles the following substantial discounts. It seems to me the reason some people in the Mac community find for not supporting Mac publishing is because they're tight with a dollar. In other words CHEAP!
