Hope someone can help me...This has me perplexed.

I bought and installed an SSD on my Mac Pro. When I tried to boot from my DVD to do the install, I kept getting a kernel panic during the boot and got the screen where it tells you to restart your computer. Thinking this might be an issue with the SSD, I pulled that drive, but I still kept getting the KP during boot from DVD.

Well, I managed to get OS X installed on the SSD without booting from Mac install DVD, but now, I get the same KP when booting from the SSD. So, I can still boot no problem from my original boot hard drive, but I can't boot from the DVD or the new SSD.

I have tried the following with no luck:

1. Reset Nram
2. tried different memory modules.
3. pulled SSD out of computer and tried to reboot to DVD
4. unplugged all devices except for keyboard and mouse (apple not third party)

None of these steps have worked. Again I can boot fine from the original boot drive, just not from the DVD or the SSD.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Your MacPro didn't come with the 8800GT graphics card, and your install DVD does not include the needed drivers. The OS version you have on the original hard drive is a later version, which includes the 8800GT drivers.

Download the 10.5.8 Combo update. Then apply it manually to the install on the SSD. Try booting again afterwards.

Thanks!!...that did the trick!!...It wouldn't let me do the 10.5.8 updater...I had to install the 10.5.2 combo and then step up to 10.5.6 and then 10.5.8. I dunno why. Anyway, its working great now...the speed of this SSD is amazing.

If anyone is interested, I installed the Crucial M225 (128 gb, 250mb read, 190mb write). Its only $295 at Newegg.

I used the Icy Dock 2.5 to 3.5 " converter to install...it fit like a glove... bought from buy.com for $19.95.
