It's dead, but the PB seems to start up OK without it; it remembers what wireless network to connect to on startup and then sets the time from the internet, so do I really need to replace the battery do you think? It's a 333mhz Bronze Keyboard model (Lombard).

Well you obviously answered the question by yourself, basically the machine _is_ working. You won't be able to store any infos in parameter ram though, And in case of a power loss (assuming your main battery is also dead) it would kick the machine off directly, including the hard drive, which is not so good.

Well in the time since I posted I've realised the G3 just doesn't cut it any more sadly. So I've replaced it with a nice 1.42ghz eMac

 iMac Core 2 Duo 17" 2ghz 3gb/250gb ||  iBook G4 12" 1.33ghz 1gb/40gb
