A friend of mine gave me the disc, I popped it in my G3 (OS X 10.1) and when I double click the setup icon it says restarted needed to continue, etc..

it then restarts and loads back into the OS as normal

but nothing happens..

any help?

while restarting, hold the "C" key, and the CD? (DVD?) will be read and you'll be taken to the installation

Did your friend give you a gray install disc? Or black? The gray disc is an OEM product and will only install on the model it originally shipped with. The black disc is the retail version that works on any Mac that will run 10.3.
