If I'd seen the text in that sig picture before, I'd have done something about it before. I don't recall ever seeing a post by dillerX before yesterday, so the fact that his sig had inappropriate language in the picture was not something I even had an opportunity to notice.
We're trying to balance between adults acting like adults and keeping out of trouble with the parents of the (numerous) underage members of our forums. And I think one reason The Big Lebowski was rated R was the kind of language that was quoted in the picture. I think the term "explicit" applies here?
How is it that crude words and explicit language are "fun" and their lack isn't? Isn't there anything else to talk about?

The fact that one word was asterisked out did not in any way change the "adult" nature of the wording. In this case, the entire sentence was unacceptably explicit.
I'm not knocking Lebowski at all, by the way. Just the use of that sort of quote in a signature-or a post for that matter.

That's silly. You're doing what the "anti-porn" crusaders do-equating (typically feminine) nudity with sex. Not the same thing at all. It's simply not appropriate for the kind of language in that picture to be in our forums. That's a completely different thing from showing a little skin.

This is silly. ghporter's a good guy and beating up on him will not bring back the lounge fun.
As I recall, what was fun about the lounge was the zany energy and creativity of it. Not high holy stands about freedom of speech on the one hand or community standards on the other hand. High, positive energy -- not this finger-pointing.
Hot babes picturefest isn't offensive to me because of the images (although their unrelenting one-after-the-other hotness underscores for me just how constructed most of the pictures are and how far away that world is from most of us, if not whether that world really exists at all). No, what sucks about that thread is the constant "dude, I would not hit that" or "dude, her ass is too small/large/brown/old" worldplay that thinks it's witty but is just really trite, tired and offensive in its core banality.
It's boring. Picturefest is strange because if you want porn, it's out there, so why bother in here?
I could go on. Lounge threads really become interesting when people bring something to the table. Same with Pol/War threads. Bring something interesting.
People ought to be banned not for language, but for being unrelentingly boring and trite.

What I find interesting is that in American culture, at least, female sex (or the titillation thereof) is fine. When it's male, it is obscene. Women making out with each other is hot, but guys kissing each other is gross. This includes language too. We have socially acceptable (almost) words for female anatomy, but male anatomy is either obscene or clinical (or both, to some).
Not to play the feminist card, but I suspect it has to do with the social power structure. A structure that has only just begun to change in the last 100 or so years.

A lot of men are hypocrites; they find women intriguing and seeing two women together very attractive, but many men feel threatened by even the suggestion of two men being together. Why, I don't know. I know myself pretty well, and I don't see a problem with other males doing whatever. I may not want to watch, but I don't see a problem with anyone expressing affection publicly (within limits-full blown making out on the street kind of bothers me, no matter who's doing it). And of course the power structure our society grew out of has everything to do with it. I can't think of a single factor in history that isn't at least somewhat influenced by who decides who can have sex with whom. Really, it all boils down to that.
I should also note that plenty of people have complained about the few male pictures posted in the "Hot Babes" thread. Isn't Orlando Bloom recognized as being very attractive? Why should people complain? My thought is that maybe they just don't want to consider the flip side of their fascination with female glamor (or lesser) pictures. You know, equal time and all that...

I reported the image because it was inappropriate. It's one thing to have a couple words asterisked-out, but quite another when the entire sentence is inappropriate and vulgar, despite four asterisks to hide a profanity. It is clear and obvious when an entire sentence is out of line, whether it's filled up with asterisks or not. The sentence, despite a missing word, is similar to seeing a hardcore porn picture of it with the genitals covered by a black circle — it doesn't make it appropriate for this community.
That's my take and I am not speaking for anyone else.

Personally, i find a lot of the pictures in the Babefest thread at least as inappropriate as the content of that sig. I like them, mind you, but I find them just as inappropriate. I find it interesting that you get legalistic about what constitutes an appropriate swimsuit (i.e you will follow the letter of the posting rules) but you get offended when someone doesn't break the letter (spirit, sure, but not the letter) of the verbal posting rules.
Justice Potter Stewart nailed it when, in an obscenity case in Ohio, he said

Our opinions of what are appropriate or inappropriate are subjective, a MacNN mod made a decision based on his subjective opinion(s), which he is entitled to do as a representative on a commercial forum where freedom of speech is not guaranteed.
Are you arguing for the image out of principal or because it is really important that it remain visible?
That being said, my subjective opinion is that the babe forum objectifies woman in an often offensive way.

I don't think being straight is hypocritical. Personally, there are some people that I really don't want to think about doing the nasty, and I don't feel like a hypocrite for thinking that. I take that view with all unattractive people equally.

I have to completely and utterly disagree with that. By far the majority of the pictures in the babe thread are not about “showing a little skin”. They’re purposely sexualised images of naked or semi-naked women in overtly pornographic poses.
If the fact that the word in Diller’s signature image that actually went against forum policy was asterisked out was not enough to prevent the sentence as a whole from being inappropriate, then the fact that genitals and nipples are carefully concealed in the babe thread images is certainly not enough from making the images themselves and what they insinuate—no, scratch that: what they scream to high heavens—any less inappropriate.
Personally, I don’t think either of them are inappropriate; but if the line is that ‘coarse language’ is inappropriate for these forums, then I can’t see any justification whatsoever for claiming that pictures that are intentionally pornographic in what they insinuate and evoke are not.
