Should I spend $400 more (for a DP 1.8), or save $400 (for a SP 1.6)? I have been using an iMac DV SE 400 for 5 years (it has been a remarkable machine), and I am ready to upgrade. I do not need an extreme machine, as I will be using it for the iApps, Internet browsing, some webpage/graphic design (real basic stuff).

I love everyones opinions on these forums, so I appreciate any replies.

Thanks

My opinion would be to save the $400 and get a 1.6, or spend an extra $400 (if you have it) and get the DP 1.8.

The single 1.8 doesn't offer significant performance over the 1.6, so it's probably not worth the extra money to you (it wasn't to me). But the DP 1.8 is well worth the money.

So the decision is $800 more. But doesn't the PCI architecture or memory make a big difference in the 1.6 and the 1.8?

If you look at the benchmarks, no the 100mhz difference in bus speed does not seem to translate into much of a difference in performance. Not a $400 worth difference, not to me, anyway.

I can't speak for PCI-X, as I've never seen any sort of comparison between it and standard PCI devices.

I feel pretty safe saying that a 1.6 with an additional $400 worth of ram will outperform a stock SP 1.8 for most things.

Get the G5 1.6, with a Radeon 9600 Pro and 256 MB RAM, and add another 1 GB RAM from Crucial.

If you haven't, post that in the market place. More people will see it.
