Ok, I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find it....I want to create a user account (ie home folder) on a 32gb usb2 flash drive so I can port all my stuff (along with my settings) back and forth to work. However, I don't know the exact procedure. Can anyone help, and also how do you log onto this account?

Not possible right now. Rumors are that Apple is working on this.

I don't understand why it takes Apple so long to do that. Is it such a hard thing to do ?

Is it possible to create an account, move the home folder to the flash drive, and then put an alias in place back on the startup disk? Obviously the flash drive would have to be present before logging in, but what would stop this from working?

I'm pretty certain that something in the OS would screw this up horribly.

No, the problem is it's too easy. Apple only likes to do the hard things.

Compelling argument, I have to say.

This is possible in Leopard. Plug in the thumb drive. Create a new user and point the system to the thumb drive as the user's home folder. To login on another Mac, make sure it's at the login screen and then plug in the thumb drive. The system should recognize the drive and ask you to confirm allowing external users to login. After accepting you will see the new user in the login window list. When you are done, logout of your account, wait for 1 minute and then pull the thumb drive out of the computer.
