hi!

i recently bought a rev B imacG5 20" 2 Ghz which i equipped with 1,5 GB of RAM.
since upgrading ro 10.4.2 and QuickTime 7 video playback - in both VLC and in games like Ghost Recon, Halo and Max Payne - gets choppy and sometimes even drops audio. i have tried installing a new Divx codec (DivxFusion Beta1) but to no avail. (interesting sidenote: gaming response in regard to mousemovements etc is now excellent, besides this video defect.)
i got the same uneven video playback when exporting an iMovie HD movie (20 mins, high quality, 3,9 GB) to .dv (qt?) format and then trying to play it back with both VLC and QT Player. the same problem has been noticeable in DVD Player and when watching movies in VLC. funnily this was not the case with my old Quicksilver G4 933 Mhz and 10.3.9. anyone got a clue?

best regards,
tobias

This might be premature but it sounds like hard drive
issues to me - the audio cutting out is good indicator
of that. What size drive do you have and how much of
it is empty? Has it been a while since you repaired your
permissions?

hi super glitcher!

first: thanks a million for your reply!
i will try to investigate if it is the hard drive, although it seems somewhat unlikely.
i have the 250 GB version of the 20" Rev B ImacG5 2Ghz. it was perhaps some nine days since last repair of permissions. i have about 50 GB of free space and i often switch processor speed to "highest" before watching a movie. as a matter of fact i have had the same type of problem since day one of my new machine. (yes, i did move some 180GB of data from my old machine but...

i have recently begun to suspect the vsync issue. what do you think of that? it would not explain the audio drops, of course...

thanks again,
tobias

If you've been having the prob since day 1 it might be
worth it to take over to an apple store and let them
comb over it - you wouldn't want anything to sneak
up and crash your box down the line... it could be the
HD, it could be bad RAM - a lot of people I know have
been having bad RAM issues and they surface in really
weird ways.... hard to tell from here.

I'm not familiar with the vsync issue?

hi!

since everything else is working perfectly it's hard to suspect the RAM. more likely the hard drive, since that should also have effect on file browsing speed, application switching, previews etc. (which all are a bit sluggish to my taste and also a lot slower than my workplace DP 1,8 Ghz PM G5)

the vsync thing is the fact that most games sync the output from the graphics card to fit the screen updating frequency chosen by the user. TFT monitors don't have that and it would explain some of the video hickups. but the audio drops?

best regards,
tobias

I know it's a pain but if it's tweakin out now..
I'd tell apple all you know and let apple care
drop the dime for it-

Meantime, hope you can find some kind of
solution
