Two people are believed to have died after a helicopter crashed in Lanarkshire.
The Squirrel aircraft came down in Jervis Wood near Lanark just after 1600 BST and was understood to have burst into flames.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said it had been led to believe two people were on board.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...ncopter115.xml

Colin McRae, the former world rally driving champion, is feared dead in a helicopter crash in Scotland.

The aircraft burst into flames after it came down in woodland near Lanark, at around 4.10pm.
Damn, I hope this is wrong. McRae is a legend.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

all but official:

Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, last night told The Sunday Telegraph he had spoken to the driver's brother and that he had confirmed the former champion had been piloting the Squirrel aircraft.

What a crock of ****. He had his 5 yr old kid with him too. If you still believe God is real, you're truly delusional. I hate it when crap like this happens, and I don't care what kind of divine power you are, this doesn't make any sense. *****! Stupid god damn helicopters! I'm never EVER getting in one ever again. They kill too many people.

That sounds a little extreme. People die in cars every day, but I'll bet you still get in them.

I don't know about helicopters, but flying in general is safer than driving. I'll bet that is true for helicopter as well. Death by helicopter crash is not something you hear about very often, and I don't think they kill many people at all.

No ****ing way! I play my first Colin McRae game in 5 years and he goes and dies 2 days later. I was watching a YouTube video of him last week. Guy rolled his car over upside down and still almost won the competition. Phenomenon. Speech ****ing less.

While I was obviously shocked hearing about this on the news, they didn't mention anything about his kid… that makes it -if that's possible- even worse.

He was such a great talented driver, always pushing the limits… what a great team Subaru ProDrive had in the 90s with Colin and Carlos Sainz…

Let's hope F1 drivers wear some black items and the ****ing damn F.I.A. can remember him today at Spa…

Descanse en paz.

"Helcopters" do not kill people. Poor or inappropriate piloting, or flying a helicopter in inappropriate conditions is the culprit. In almost all cases, air accidents are due to pilot error, not aircraft failures, and certainly not aircraft design issues. I've flown in a helicopter-I even took my then 6-year old son up in one. It was a Bell model 47-you're pretty much out in the air while riding in this thing. Flying is almost always much safer than driving anything anywhere, and I am always bothered when people suggest that the aircraft or worse the type of aircraft is at fault in an accident.

I'm saddened to hear about Colin, but with his line of work, he risked dieing at high speed pretty much every day. Would it have been better for him to die in a wreck while racing?

Dangit, I love Colin McRae. This is dumb. If I think of Colin's death, I can only imagine him flying off a cliff or something in his Subaru. This is very sad news. I feel sorry for his family too. Prodrive must be quite unhappy as well.

I feel for the wife and daughter, Alison and Holly (if I remember correctly).

No matter how many times bad things happen, these sorts of things always take us by surprise.

In a very strange coincidence, Dave Richards, Prodrive boss and Colin's ex-boss and close friends was involved in an emergency landing in his helicopter today on his way home from the Grand Prix at Spa:

RIP.

Really sad that he's gone. This is the the video of the event Papernotes was talking about, and the picture that IceEnclosure posted. I hadn't seen it before, but it completely sums up what he was all about.

I remember one WRC race where McRae was kicking the rear fender of his car back into place before rocketing away.

Truly a legend.

I wanted to punch his navigator. During the replays of the roll you hear her in the car going "Left turn... WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
