This belongs in Peripherals.
Why wouldn't they work with the PowerBook G4?
The PowerBook G4 has USB and is definitely fast enough to power these speakers. I think it's obvious they would function.

The pro speakers will not. They require amplification (the soundsticks/isub have a built in amp), and the pbg4 does not have amplification for USB Audio, the only mac that does is the Powermac G4 made after January 2001 (PowerMac G4 Digital Audio and PowerMac G4 Quicksilver)[/LIST]

This page says that they can only be used with the new Power Mac G4 desktop systems announced on Jan. 9, 2001.

The Cube speakers will work with the PowerBook; it will just be very quiet.

actually the cube speakers work fine with my g4 powerbook, my lombard g3 powerbook and my beige g3 desktop (using a belkin usb&firewire pci card). i think you're confusing the apple pro speakers (analog connection) with the apple cube pro speakers (usb connection)...

They work?
I didn't think so. I thought Cube speakers needed an amplified electrical current only available on the G4 Cube system.

That is correct. I have a Cube and the non-amplified USB baseballs that came with it, and a 667 Ti. These speakers will work on the Ti, but at max volume they are very quiet. I plugged in my amplified (Sony) analog speakers in the Ti and had all the volume you want and more.
I have not tested the Soundsticks, but they are amplified, it would stand to reason they would work.

The Soundsticks work great, from my experience. I have my Ti with soundsticks in my bedroom, and not even at full volume, they fill up my (albeit small) apartment really well.

Don't get the SoundSticks.
USB audio sucks, the SoundSticks are overpriced, and don't sound that great.

If you buy the SoundSticks, be sure you are buying them because... - your microphone jack is broken
- you already have some translucency going on in you room and want to keep the Apple/HK look going
- you have too much money and want good-looking speakers with mediocre sound quality that are vastly overpriced

I disagree. The soundsticks are some of the best sounding speakers around in the $100-200 price range. The clarity of the sound is amazing. And I don't notice any loss of sound quality from being USB enabled. I wish I could hook them up to my stereo system.

Sure, the Soundsticks are cool lookin...but for the same price (or less) you can get a nice set of Klipsch speakers, or even Monsoons. If you've got a nice Apple display going, and a stylish Powermac (or 'book) and you want it coordinated...Soundsticks are great, but if you want SUPREME sound, get Klipsch, if you want great sound in a small space, get the Monsoons. Just my .02hz
PS I've tried the 'Sticks, Klipsch, and 'Soons, and the Kilipsch are the best hands-down.
