My 2.5 year old MacBook with a 60 gig hard drive crashed just this week. I sent it back today since I have AppleCare - what are the chances that they will replace it with a larger hard drive? Do they still have 60 gig drives in their parts closet?

You can still buy new 60GB 2.5" drives - I doubt they would be willing to upgrade it to a larger one for free. However, if you're under AppleCare, you're able to pay a fee to get the HDD upgraded anyway. I would ask them about the cost of upgrading it under AppleCare, since you're getting the HDD replaced anyway.

Hmm, I had not considered that. Wish I would have thought of it before sending it in.

Moreover, in the past (but I don't know today) Apple would revert after repair the machine to its factory hardware configuration. I remember very clearly the case of an old Powerbook with upgraded memory I sent for repair; the guy told me to put back the factory memory since this is what Apple will do anyway and there is no means to take back the third-party one. Note that this was in Europe many years ago.

They better not revert the memory on me. I have 2 gigs of ram, if I get it back with 512 MB I'm going to be pretty cranky.

Just got it back with an 80 gig HD and they didn't take out my 2 gigs of RAM, woohoo! :-D
Now I hope this MacBook can last me 2.5 more years.
