Is it just me, or is the US finally starting to pay attention to the World Cup?.Generally you almost never hear the mention of soccer/futbol here unless your drinking with friends and someone brings up the topic of how much fun you'd think it's be to join in a riot.

In '06, I wouldn't have known it was going on if I didn't have a coworker at the time who was originally from Nigeria and spent several years in the UK (As such he's a huge Manchester United fan). I remember the only way to see any of the matches was to turn to one of the international channels.

This time I'm seeing the Ads and news for it all over the place. It's being broadcast on ESPN, and my local Wally World even has World Cup merchandise (Right next to the Dale Earnhart Jr. shrine and swag section no less).

So is soccer working its way up to joining the likes of NFL Football, Baseball, and Basketball in American sports interest?
What, me worry?

Yeah, it's happening, albeit, slowly.

In terms of money, it will take a long while until it can compete with the "American" sports.

No, the most watched sporting event in the world still isn't grabbing American interest. Even with Beckham playing there.

Most of the people in our office have it on (we all get cable at our desks), and our VP is having a mini World Cup party in his office (about 5 ppl watching on his ~42"er).

A few of the soccer devotees in the office are watching (and making plans for viewing parties on Saturday), but it'll probably be like every time the world cup comes on: a flurry of interest pre, during and post World Cup and then interest levels will fall back down to where they normally are during non-World Cup years.

Even here in football-centric Louisiana, people are talking a lot about it. I've probably been invited to ten people's houses to watch Saturday's game, and at least two friends are having massive World Cup Final parties at their houses.

Keep in mind this is the same group of people that wears LSU purple and gold t-shirts all week, every week. They probably haven't watched more than a match of any of the previous Cups.

Dear Amerika,
please, please, please thrash us in tomorrow's game.

I hate soccer with a passion (let's face it - it's 22 overpaid, underdressed blokes kicking a pig's bladder around a field for 90 minutes) and thus find delight in watching all the soccer bores' expressions when their chosen team loses.

So, please win.

Thanks.

I don't think the US is paying any more attention to the World Cup, personally. I haven't seen ads for it, nor have I heard anyone talking about it. Americans pay attention to American football, baseball and basketball. Sometimes hockey. But soccer? I think soccer penetration of the American market has fallen to even more minuscule levels, actually.

Doofy's view of soccer is more proof that he's an American at heart.

I think you see more about it this year because ESPN is covering it for the US. And since ABC owns ESPN you will see ads everyday. And the USA Team is pretty good this year, so that could get some interest as well.

We have videos of Tonya Harding faking falls over shoe laces, why do we need soccer/football?

America loves sports that we invented, or at least popularized. Basketball, baseball, and football all fit, even if football and baseball were derived from older sports. Soccer is growing very slowly, coincidentally (or maybe not?) as nationalistic pride takes a slow downward turn.

I just watched the Mexico/South Africa match this morning. Two things that I forgot since the last World Cup:

1. Mexican players dive constantly.
2. Those freaking horns are annoying. They sound like bees in those kind of numbers.

I think it might be a regional thing. No one really gives a crap about the game down in Arizona, but people in Seattle are paying more attention than I'm used to. But again, this is my first World Cup up here, so I don't know if there's a year-over-year increase.

The Sounders and Toronto FC have unbelievable fan bases (for US soccer). I'm not sure about the other MLS teams though. I live 3 and 3.5 hours from Dallas and Houston respectively, but I've never been to one of their games.

I would think with the Hispanic-heavy populations, they'd be popular, but I think most immigrants are still more interested in the Mexican Premier Division.

Oddly, this is just about the only positive thing I can find to say about football. Yah yeah, soccer, all right!

The Vuvuzela will be the death of any US ratings.

I made it through the first two games today, and... I'm done. I couldn't hear the crowd, I couldn't hear the ref's whistles and I could barely hear the ESPN commentators.

Yeah, unless they figure out a way to mic the announcers better, and mute the sound of those horns, this will be a terrible Word Cup from a watchability standpoint.

Pity really, as it's the first one I've seen since I started watching in 94 where the experience wasn't terrific. Allowing them in a World Cup was a mistake, if they drown out the different countries' crowd chants and the commentators.

Otherwise - go Yanks!!!

There's constant movement, passing, things developing. And no breaks or stupid TV timeouts. And really if you watch European soccer, it's just a different level of skill and crowd ambience.

There's just no comparison to the US soccer experience, goals or no.

If find soccer/football exciting for about 10 minutes out of the 90. The other 80 minutes is boooooring.

Hockey is the perfect balance of scoring frequency and action.
