Montreal startup AmpMe has launched an app that allows users to play the same song on multiple smartphones and tablets at the same time. AmpMe app
iOS and
Android can effectively turn mobile devices into extra speakers, with the app not only playing the track but also keeping it synchronized across all connected devices, with more smartphone speakers effectively creating a clearer and louder audio performance compared to a single device.
One user acts as host for the group, controlling the playlist and searching for songs, with other devices able to join the party by entering a four-digit party code. Instead of simply streaming the track between mobile devices using Wi-FI or Bluetooth, the app requires guest devices to put their smartphone's microphone close to the host's speaker, with proprietary audio fingerprinting technology helping the two device to sync up in seconds.
While it primarily turns smartphones into extra speakers, AmpMe can also work with Bluetooth speakers connected to guest devices, so long as they include a microphone. Owners of the Apple Watch can control music playback in a group they host, via a custom app. At launch, the app will work with SoundCloud, but the company claims the app will work with more music services in the future.
AmpMe is available today as a free download for
iOS devices running iOS 7.1 or later, as well as via
Google Play. A
MacNN hands on with the app is currently underway.
