Welcome to the worlds largest swimming pool. This thing is huge. One news story reports that it is 115 feet deep in the deep end (might be a typo).

Saline solutions are becoming more popular in swimming pools. It's not nearly the salt content of the oceans, but it keeps bacteria growth down, is safer for swimmers, it is cheaper, and requires less maintenance than traditional chlorine and other chemicals.

My parents switch to saltwater last summer. I love it. You can easily open your eyes underwater without them being irritated.

Spent on what? Deforestation? I assure you, a resort is about the best thing that could have been built there.
Now they will have jobs and other opportunities to serve the tourist trade.
Did you even read why they don't swim in that section of the ocean? It's ain't like California beaches.

While I agree that job opportunities are good, an undertaking of that kind is never helpful to the environment or economy of a country like that.

Actually, it probably is helpful to that section of the country regarding deforestation. The resort will bring in many foreign visitors and with those visitors comes foreign money. And with the money comes a desire to keep that money coming. They cut down the surrounding forests and people aren't going to want to come.
It will certainly help the country's economy. Arguing against that is futile.
Even I want to go now. If they never would have built it, I never would have heard of it. Bonus that they do it in a way that that is not harmful to the ocean and you still get the beauty of the ocean.

Technically, it's a lagoon and not a pool. From what I have read it has a sand bottom and was just expanded upon from a pre-existing body of water. They added saline filtration and viola!

Actually, San Alfonso has been great for Algarrobo's (ie. the local) economy.
It's a rather small town, that was a popular summer spot during the 70's. Then it went downhill until they built San Alfonso del Mar during the 90's and Los Altos de San Alfonso (the buildings to the right). Both have a lot of new people and of course, money.
As for the pool, the sea in Chile is very cold (see Humboldt Current) so it's quite easy to see why they would build it.
