Two days ago I checked my email and all was well. Yesterday I tried to check my mail via Mail.app and kept getting an SSL/server error. I went online and checked my mail no problem. Today I try to check my mail again (with Mail.app) and get the same error. I checked all my settings in Mail and online with Gmail and they are correct. I went ahead and deleted my local account in Mail and started completely over (needed to clean out my inbox anyway). Still no luck. To try to determine who is having the problem I set up an account in Entourage and tried to log in (I am using POP mail for these accounts). Still no luck. Entourage can't find the POP server apparently. Can someone tell me if I am the problem here, and if so what can I do to correct it. I can at least check my mail online, but frankly it's annoying not to be able to use Mail.

I switched to using IMAP on my gmail accounts (tring it out for a month, and depending on how I like it, I'll stay or switch back).
I used to have the same problem when I used gmail pop in 10.4, to fix it I would have to remove and recreate the GMAIL pop account in mail.app. What I would find is that even though I kept setting GMail pop to use SSL, it would keep reverting to different ports instead of the SSL ports like it should have been, and was set to.
What happens if you remove and recreat the email accounts in Mail for the gmail account? And, have you tried IMAP instead?

I removed my Mail account and recreated it. After I did I still get the same message. I also created an account in Entourage to try that way and it can't find the POP server at Gmail. I haven't tried IMAP yet, that is the next step. What is the difference between the two? I see many people switching to IMAP and some end up switching back because of various glitches.

I had glitches using IMAP on Google. Apparently Google saves your messages as you type them. Well, Google sent messages every few minutes while I was composing lengthy emails. Or at least that's what my BlackBerry said it did beause it gets copies of my sent messages - another quirk that Google has.
