Recently when I update Mac OS X software (such as today's Java update for Leapord) the updating process stops and I get a message saying the PACESupport.ktext in System/Library/Extensions has a problem or has been wrongly installed. I have no idea what this is and tell the updating process to continue. Can anyone explain what what the extension is, if I should trash it or what?

It means that at some point you used a Nikon product that had poorly designed software support. See this Apple Support thread.

The PACESupport.kext is used by products that use the PACE copy protection - lots of audio FX plug-ins use it, notably including the freeware SPL plug-ins.

Sphric Harlot—I don't use Nikon products but I do use an audio plug-in, so no doubt that is the problem. Thanks very much for the advice and posting the update URL.

Sorry for not giving the best explanation.

You highlighted a rather more odd case - good to know.
