Up until the last time I ran the software update, I was able to choose power management settings within the menu bar, without opening the system preferences, by clicking on the battery icon. It used to have a list with "Better Performance" "Better Battery life" and "Custom..." much like the pull down menu in the system preferences, which it now lacks. This feature was present in Tiger and the earlier updates of Leopard (I think from 10.5.1 to 10.5.4). Now it looks like it did in Panther. I assume this is intentional, as it would be a very odd issue if it were a bug. I've poked around in the system prefs to see if there's a way to bring it back but I haven't found it. I switch back and forth between performance and better battery quite a lot since I'm using a G4 powerbook, and sometimes it runs a bit slow on battery.

Thanks a bunch!

It's not a bug. It was removed with one of the Leopard decimal updates.

It's part of an overall move to simplify the interface: by nudging you to the correct System Prefs pane, you learn that System Prefs are where you go to change, well, your system preferences. You'll also note that "Location" is gone from the Apple menu, and many other menu bar extensions have reduced or removed options. Overall, this makes sense: one consistent way to perform an action is much better than a multitude of kinda maybe partial options.

My suspicion is that they improved power management such that it wasn't necessary to manually control it anymore. Dunno if that's true though.

Ya'll only have one location; i.e. 'Automatic'...

Point being "Location" always used to appear, and offer access to Network Preferences: now it doesn't. Simple.
