Upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger with no DVDROM?

Greetings from the 8th St. Taco Bell.
My wife has a first generation MacBook Pro with an Intel processor. She's running Mac OS 10.4.11. A while ago her Superdrive went out on her. The problem is she's starting to get left behind because of her old OS. Can't do the latest versions of Skype, Firefox, iOS...
The other problem is that my earnings as the night manager at Taco Bell don't provide enough to pay for a new drive for her machine right now. BUT...I do have a copy of the latest OS on disk that I purchased from the Mac Store.
So my question is this. Is it possible to upgrade her OS without using a DVD drive? I know that with Windows I can copy everything to a USB drive and boot to that for an upgrade. Is it possible to do that on my wife's Mac?

You should be able to use a USB external drive (like an optical drive in a USB enclosure) to run the Snow Leopard upgrade. If you have access to another Mac, you could also use Target Disk Mode to make the other Mac act like a USB optical drive to do the upgrade.
I hope that is at least a start for you to get your wife's machine upgraded.

If you know anyone with a current Mac, you could also try "Remote Install Mac OS X" (in the Utility folder), or using CD/DVD Sharing -- both of which were brought about with the MacBook Air. One or the other should sort you out.

Building external Mac install discs is so much easier than it is with windows. You will need use of a Mac with a working optical drive though.
Use Disk Utility to make a disk image of the Snow Leopard disc, then restore it to a USB or firewire external disk.
If you can't get another Mac with working optical, then you could always download a torrent of Snow Leopard. I see no real legal issue since you bought it anyway. Should come as a .dmg.

It's getting to the point where downloading pirated software, let alone OPERATING SYSTEM software, off torrent sites, is just a really stupid idea.
It started seven years or so ago, when a download purporting to be an Office 2004 installer did nothing but erase the user's home directory, but things have got a lot more inscrutable since then.

A little common sense goes a long way when it comes to torrents. Where you get them and how rigorously you check the comments before you download. Plus dodgy ones don't tend to stay around very long.

I LOVE it when somebody downloads a torrent and it completely hoses their system. Seriously. That stuff makes me laugh all day.
