Endnote is a nice and handy app, but I hate the fact that it's so obviously ported from Windows and doesn't have that feel of a native mac application... Are there any good alternatives?

BibDesk.

I started with BibDesk, and it's great, but I have to say I ended up hand-editing my bibliography in Vim. It's now got about 258 entries in it, all thorough and correct BibTeX.

BibTeX is the way to go, and BibDesk uses it.

Otherwise, look at Pybliographer.

Thanks! Bibdesk looks pretty good, apart from the ugly icons

Also too bad that it doesn't integrate with OfficeX, that comes in handy with Endnote...

Pybliographer doesn't look very *native*...

Not native at all!

BibDesk will allow you to grab formatted entries, I think, but if you want Word integration, your only choice is Endnote.

My advice: don't use Word for any kind of writing where you'll be needing references! Look up LyX (indeed, LyX/Mac).

I was going to say bibtex too, whether you use BibDesk or not.

My only problem with it is that it's hard to get URLs to work. Does anyone know of a good solution? I've just been putting them in the "note" attribute.

One of the BibTeX styles (natbib?) supports the URI field natively, appending it.

I put it in the note field as a stopgap, though when I output to HTML I make sure to strip the extraneous notes.

I don't think there's a better way --- it's not a standard tag. You could always extend the bib style of your choice, though. One day...
