Looks beyond neat.
Questions I have so far.
Is that Growl notifying him, or Dropbox?
Was that guy saying "why do you keep sending me this crap?" on purpose or what?
And lastly, what kind of Internet does this guy have? Those uploads and downloads are speedy!
I'm impressed that it's so quick though, really. I imagine that when or if it grows in popularity though, server stress may increase, so it may not be quite as snappy.

Wow, very very cool. I would LOVE the ability to host images by simply putting them in a folder on my computer...none of this Imageshack or Photobucket crap.
How much will this cost once it comes out for real?

My three comments:
1) Looks like MacFUSE & MacFusion, but since I enjoy the concept of these types of programs, it's cool.
2) Yes, that's growl.
3) Vista looks like ass.

I'm hoping its cheap, but who knows.
That's Vista without Aero. So yes, it looks like ass.

I use, and LOVE, a program called Imagewell that lets you drag a file to the toolbar where it resizes, FTPs and copies the URL to the clipboard all in one step. Makes things pretty damn easy, but I definitely would also love to be able to this also.

In my opinion, it is both naive and foolish to not think about this sort of stuff. I'm not trying to suggest that this product will be a dud, it looks good, but before the slobbering ought to come a sober look at the bait.

I've been playing with dropbox all night and it is great. I haven't used any of the other similar apps I've heard about, but this one is really well integrated and seamless to use. The upload speeds are pretty good too.
Depending on the cost, I would consider upgrading to a paid version for this. Even if S3 is cheaper, I just like the ease of use of this so far.

Just a few minutes. I happened to catch one of the developers on the macnn IRC channel and he set me up right away.

I've been in the Beta for a couple of weeks already, it's shaping up nicely. There are still plenty of core-features missing (e.g. you can't bulk-purge deleted files - if you upload 1000 text documents with sensitive data, delete them and really want them gone forever... have fun clicking those 1000 delete-buttons.) but I really think that this is what iDisk should be.
My only concern is privacy and security. One of the devs mentioned that a local-version to install on your own server is planned in the (not near) future — that would rock my world.
I have invites left -> feel free to PM me.

Yea, Amazon's S3 which I understand other companies have made better front ends for. I've never used any of them but I hear about them on the security now podcast all the time.

I'd like to note that Dropbox plays very nicely with TrueCrypt.
Adding a 1MB file to a 1GB TrueCrypt-Volume does not trigger a complete reupload of the entire volume, it simply updates the blocks that were changed. That isn't possible with a plain-vanilla AWS S3 account AFAIK?
It's also quite snappy as Dropbox (of course) caches everything on the disk.
Granted, you'll miss out on the web-access for the files in the Volume but if it wasn't for TrueCrypt I wouldn't backup any of my sensitive/personal data on Dropbox to begin with.

I've used S3 with Jungle disk and its ... not bad. It does however take FOREVER to get anything backed up. I've got a 35G music collection and it didn't complete it over a weekend (I left the Mac on all weekend while I was away).
I'll be playing with Dropbox tonight cheers moep.

Yes, it seems like it. From the dropbox invite mail:
Share the love
The beta is still invite-only, but we're no longer keeping the details under wraps -- and you're welcome to invite up to 10 friends to the service (they'll be able to download Dropbox too.)

I just realized that every dropbox account owner has unlimited beta invites. All you have to do is share a folder with someone (by entering his email address) and he will receive a form that allows the creation of a new account.
The only downside I see is that all new accounts are restricted to 2GB instead of 10GB storage.
