Eternally '...disconnecting' requires restart!

Can't reliably repeat, but it may be something to do with sleep and or the modem plug being disconnected and reconnected

Anyone else seen this

Well, here this is not generally true.

I have installed Pnather on a data-partition for testing. In Jaguar I have a LittleSecrets-File with extension .ltts. In Panther I noticed that "Hide Extension" was disabled, because the Application LittleSecrets was not launched before in Panther. After Launching the file, and defining "launch all with >>Application<<", Hide Extension was enabled for that kind of file.

Thus the system first has to come to know that an application is available to launch the specific file with its specific extension. Otherwise the System regards the file as "unknown", which includes all characters in its name, including the extension.

mail still doesn't work properly when in the background and supposedly 'automatically checking every XX minutes' - have to bring it to the foreground and click on one of the mailboxes to have mail check it. this is with one of the mailboxes in IMAP format. i dunno if the same holds true for an all-POP mailbox setup.

First day of real work with Panther that I clean-installed only two days ago. The only thing I did was to reinstall Keynote and TeTex...

...I already had two crashes... Everything freezes...and... reboot mandatory... Never had this kind of problem with Jaguar... While this may not qualify as a bug, it still is a... bummer... (even if the computer doesn't go like beep beep beep beep...)

In the system preferences for both screensaver and expose, you can set hot corners, unfortunately to different actions with unpredictable results.

Expose's hot corners come with preset actions for expose by default. This can be disconcerting if you are trying to set screensaver's hot corners and do not know this.

It appears that the hot corners for expose will trump screensaver sometimes. Perhaps there should only be one master setting for hot corners or they should link so they cannot be set to different actions.

Try this one.
With MAIL "closed". Launch Safari, then highlight the url. Then select
Safari/Services/Mail/send section to.

For me, Classic launches and I also get this interesting warning. Something to the effect of

'the version of Quicktime installed..blah blah
OS9 system folder....'

I also have to do a force quit Safari or Safari will go back to normal ops. ???

Now with Mail open and running. No worries.

Works for me, albiet, the new message window is way in the background (behind everything.)

same with me.

just curious if the problem that I mentioned
can be attributed to panther on an older mac.
I'm using a dp450. just a thougth.
I had problems with the original 10.2.8 and maybe this is just carrying over with panther.
or not ?

Not really a bug, but does anyone know why Apple continues to ignore Automatic proxy configuration files (*.pac). Seems like a pretty simple feature to have implemented by now and one that is used extremely widely especially in the University and corporate setting. :/

I have installed two small shareware apps
both with menu bar icons which don't
work with 10.3.1.

A) Sleepless : Has no pull down menu, and
should remove itself from the dock but does not.

B) 'LaunchitemsX' menubar : Also does not
have it's pull-down menu.

C) PTHClock also will not remove itself from
the dock.

Lastly does anyone know when Iconfactory
will release candybar for 10.3.1 ?

it is official...
10.3.1 does NOT work with 500MHz iMac (Indigo i think) w/CDRW.
10.3 works fine. after 10.3.1 update, it will not boot. *sigh* time for the 4th installation of Panther...*grr*
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

I'm experiencing a bug that is driving me crazy. Sometimes when I right-click to bring up a context menu (using a Logitech iFeel mouse) the menu will appear then go away. Or sometimes it will appear twice. Other times it works fine. Here's an example...

http://members.evansville.net/ckohle...icktrouble.mov

Sometimes I can't even click on a window to give it focus or click on some GUI elements and not others! I've been able to reproduce this again and again.

Crash can be recreated.

PowerMac G4 Dual 1.42 2 gigs of RAM Mac OS X 10.3.1, fresh install on, initialized HD.

Finder crashes 90% of the time if I select and drag more than one file at a time. This can be replicated on same Mac and other Macs in my office all running Panther. This is done with 8 (does not have to be as many as 8) files on my desktop WITH show icon preview turned on, if icon preview is off crash will not occur, but I need icon preview on.

This isn't a panther bug. It happens to me on Jaguar as well. It might be a logitech bug as I'm using a Logitech mouse as well and they both use the same preference application.

Preview:

...Im studying ComputerSciences and therefore have a lot of mathematical expressions in the PDFs given to us boy the profs...

Preview refuses to properly print greek characters as omega, pi, sigma etc and dos not display them on the screen at all...
AcrobatReader does fine. So its not due to mising fonts...

10.3.1 did not fix this...

This did not happen in 10.2.8.

with regards to the Terminal shadowed text bug, where can I go to find out when it'll be fixed? I don't want to mix the fix.

Here is my bug:

1. Open Finder in column view
2. Browse to a file that contains wither a movie or a sound clip, such as an mp3 file.
3. Start previewing in Finder by clicking the Play symbol
4. Now, Open up another Finder window in icon view.
5. Try to select multiple files or folders by dragging the mouse. The drawn rectangle is jumping around and it is impossible to select the items.

The same thing happens if you try to select items on the desktop.

The bug was here in 10.3 and is still here in 10.3.1

setenv TERM vt100

On my computer, it doesn't matter if icon Preview on or off. It will only crash the Finder if "Show Item Info" is on.

Sometimes when I move a file from the desktop to the hard disk it copies the file instead of moving it. Which means I then have to delete the original, then empty trash, wasting my time.

You can also easily change the $TERM setting via the Terminal program's Preferences.

When stealing a .jpg from a Safari web page by dragging it to a Finder window, it almost always downloads twice, forcing me to cancel the 2nd instance in Safari's 'Downloads' windoid.

When I release the mouse button to drop the image, Panther's animation of the action is repeated, and so is the download.

This never happened in Jaguar.

RAAHHHH!
I do not understand what the issue here is supposed to be.

I have repeated the steps outlined here on various Macs running 10.3 or 10.3.1 and I have not seen anything unusual.

Can someone please explain this bug with more detail than "RAAHHHH!" or "Good one! Nice flying effect too."

Since 10.3 I often see my text cursor in the wrong place. Not all the time, but I can be typing - often in safari text boxes - and the cursor is half a character too far to the right, making it difficult to select text or delete single space characters.

The text label flies off the screen along with the other application windows.

I'm using 10.3.1 now and the same undocumented feature as was in 10.3.0 remains. Every so often the screen resolution suddenly changes from 1024x768 to one that shows every window open but not over one another but separate so for all intents and purposes it could be the maximum resolution on a 23" Cinema Display. Of course none of the windows are readable because they are so small. Also, nothing more can be done until one of the windows are clicked on.

All this on a 333MHz iMac tray loader with 288MB.

Any ideas anyone?

This never happened in Jaguar.
Huh? Downloads twice?
Doesn't happen to me though.

Assuming this is what it sounds like... hehehe, please excuse me if I giggle a little, as this is a very well documented new feature in 10.3 called Expos. It is meant to happen and allows you to select other windows more easily than the before. Go to the Expos settings in System Preferences and you should read this at Apple.com

Edit: If it is activating (apparently randomly) it is likely that you have hot corners set up for (one of) the three Expos modes (show all open windows, show only the current apps open windows, show desktop) and you are accidentally activating one of them by putting your pointer into its corner on the screen (e.g. top left for all windows). Again, see your sys prefs to see what I mean by this.

don't know if this is a repeat or not - please excuse me for not reading all the pages of this thread!!

Try this:
1- Enter a blank CD
2- when the dialog comes up asking you to name it, type a character or two
3- click on the menu bar - I was clicking on the clock to see the date
4- when you return to the dialog box, it is impossible to enter any more text.

Now, is that just me? Or is it a genuine Panther Bug?

I get a "kernel error" when using Final Cut Pro. Not updated version. Just FCP 4.0. When I go to the settings, the app quits.

I forgot so mention that it would work flawlessly in jaguar. I now use 10.3.1 If I cannot find the solution, than I'll probally revert back to Jaguar.

Happened with an upgrade from 10.2.6 and a clean install.

I have the same problem and I may have found a way around. I would like to see if this works for anyone else.

1. Click on desktop
2. Select Finder/View/Show View Options
3. Apply the following settings:
Icon Size 48x48
Text size 12pt
Label Position Bottom
Snap to Grid unchecked
Show Item Info unchecked
Show Icon Preview checked
Keep arrange by name

Don't know if this qualifies-but, i just turned on my PB G4 with Panther. And my desktop was bare, no icons, nothing but the HD. I opened Entourage, and no saved emails. Opened IE and no bookmarks. Opened other Apps and all the settings were gone.
i had to do it all over .
This is not pleasant.

Now that 10.3.1 has been out for a couple of days already, why hasn't Apple fixed the International settings bug yet?

The bug that causes the menu widgets to disappear and blah blah.
So instead of choosing Singapore, I have to choose another country (eg; Australia).

Minor issue but it bugs me. :|

ATI Radeon 9700 drivers (new AlBooks & G5's):

1) don't support point antialiasing
2) don't support line antialiasing
3) can't support polygon antialiasing
4) don't support line stipple
5) don't draw lines less than 1px wide
6) kill performance while dragging a window
7) tend to break VBL sync very often

Misleading advertising.

Not sure if this one has been mentioned or not but when there are at least two people signed in (one person "sleeping" and the other using the computer) and you fast-user switch from the curent user back to the sleeping user and try and log in the "cube" shows the login screen 180 flipped. Not a big deal but looks weird.

This effect DOES happen to me on a Powerbook (black G3 500). (1024 x 768 resolution.) I usually notice it when doing a bunch of downloads. As you state, they pile up in the corner.

On a related subject, Safari sometimes forgets the folder I had designated as the "Download" folder, and instead dumps everything on the Desktop. This was a problem under 10.2 also.

In my original jaguar install I had a the spindowmn bug. One of my drives spun down if not in in use even though in Energy Saver the the drive sleep option was unchecked. it was annoyinng because when I performed a function I'd have to wait for the drive to spin up to complete the function. 'Spindown fix" solved my problem. I did an upgrade install of Panther and it has been rock solid for me since the install except for the return of this annoying spindown of the drive. I have a clean install of Panther on another drive but I haven't spent much time on it since I'm slowly migrating over. Has the spindown bug returned or is it the legacy bug returned on my
upgrade install? By the way, SpindownFix doesn't help in Panther.

using Top then cancelling the process by either using ctrl-c, or command-., will clear the Terminal screen and bring you back to a prompt.
More annoying is the fact that it does this to man pages as well. Quite frustrating to not have help and an empty command prompt on the screen at the same time.

I get have experienced the finder crash when dragging multiple files.

Stopped after reboot

I have had the "double download" happen when dragging an image from safari.

Stopped after reboot

But this:
Every time that I try to launch the terminal it does this. Yes that little blue dot is it. I have tried everything. Turned off all suspect programs... nuttin!

More Proof: (.mov)

Any Suggestions?
Do or do not.... there is NO try.

Here is one almost nobody else has:

I can't get the hard drive icons off my desktop. I can check & uncheck "Hard Disks" in Finder Prefs->General->Show these items on the Desktop, but my hard drives just sit there! My install was an upgrade/install, but I did a virgin install of Panther on an erased partition to check this bug and it was still present.

Also - My Trash window won't retain its view prefs. Several people mentioned this one.

I have noticed that not all systems have all the bugs, in fact, I was unable to reproduce many of the posted bugs on my system.

Change your Terminal prefs and Declare the terminal type as vt100. This will fix the screen clearing problem you mentioned.

Don't change your Terminal emulation to vt100. Fix your pager instead.

put this in your .bash_profile:
LESS="-ERmX~"; export LESS
LESSCHARSET="utf-8"; export LESSCHARSET
PAGER="less -ERmX~"; export PAGER

it's the -X part you want, the rest is just what I use.
