So, are we going to find out what these numbers mean this season? Tonight?

Take the first number, then count up to the first prime number you come to, multiply that by the second number and add the third number. Divide that by the fourth number and multiply by the fifth number. Take the difference between that and the 6th number and then imagine it tattooed on Evangeline Lily's exquisite bare ass.

Quite apart from the fact that I have no idea who Evangeline Lily is or any desire to see a number tattooed on her bare ass, my head would explode long before I managed to even get there, with that explanation.

Back to the old formula again... not really answering any questions raised previously and snowing you under with more unclear crap on what is happening when and why.

The first hour recap is yet another insult; basically recapping 3 seasons in less than an hour which really means not a whole lot really happened...

For sure

I watched this first episode of season 4 and I approve of it. It is the good old Lost, no answers, lots of questions and weird stuff happening.

Remember, Twin Peaks didn't suck until they started providing answers. Perhaps Lost has learned something from that..

in any case, this is the third last season. There will be an end. However silly or disappointing, it has been a fun ride!

Didn't any of you watch that summer internet thing a few years ago where the numbers were explained? They're the variables in the Valenzetti equation, which predicts the time left until the end of the world.

My criticism of Lost is that there was just way too much going on. The monster, the mysterious number sequence, the Others, the Dharma Initiative. Ultimately it was a messy and dissatisfying piece of story telling, like listening to a band with four lead singers, five drummers, a choir, three simultaneous guitar solos, and cow bells—cow bells galore.

That's what makes it interesting for me. Unlike a band playing a three minute song, this story is playing out over a long period of time. Most episodes feature one of two character back stories (and now future stories) woven into the overall story.

Who's Brian?

No. What I mean is, it was sloppy story telling. A good director cuts every scene that does not advance the story, however well-shot or well-acted or incidentally interesting it may be. Omissions are not accidents. And writer should do the same. His job is to look at the mass of experiences that go to make up a life or an experience or even a series of moments as a scultptor looks at a marble slab: Infinite possible forms inhere in it, but the artist finds one, and chisels off everything else. A good writer should find the essential predicament, and bring out its characteristic details with an optimal economy of means. Bringing in new characters (say, Scrappy-do), monsters, or mysteries is a cheap ploy to ratchet up viewer interest.

In the end, Lost did not deliver the pleasure of closure.

But Lost is, above all else, a mystery. They have to give us dead ends and red herrings to keep us off guard. Besides, they've already shown that seemingly unrelated events are actually connected.

In the end, Lost did not deliver the pleasure of closure.
It's not over. Furthermore, it's not about the ending; it's about the journey. We already know they're going to get off the island, but we don't know how. Not knowing (and constantly trying to figure it out) is what makes it interesting to me.

Nothing as of yet has shown how they get off the island. It's obvious now that there's still some people left there.

Did you watch the new episode? There seems to be some indication that at least some people didn't want to be left behind, or at least "needed" the people who did leave.

Yeah, I know. I was just saying that Locke, although he's a candidate for the mystery funeral (along with Michael, Sawyer, and Ben IMO), would probably be one of the people who stayed behind. I find it interesting that he's so against the others (not "the Others") being rescued when nothing's stopping him from voluntarily staying regardless.

I can't decide what Locke's motive is. Why did he blow up the sub? Preventing the communicaid with the frigate makes sense assuming that the people on that ship really do have bad intentions... but why blow up the sub? What does Locke know? What does he know is going to happen to people who leave... to people who stay? Why the hell won't he tell us!?!?!?

From the fact that's Hurley's back, it seems like Locke's group wound up being rescued too (and judging from last season's finale, it sounds like they were right to start out with).

From the Sri Lanka video, we know that the island is related to changing the numbers. Perhaps their presence on the island will change the numbers, thus altering the course of humanity. When put in this perspective, Locke's motivations make sense. He would want to prevent anyone from leaving the island.

Well, a lot can happen between then and now. If only 6 people made it off the island, there are going to be a lot of deaths and/or people left behind.

I'm guessing that the guy that Kate had to get back to was Ben as well. But how did they end up working for him? This is getting pretty crazy! I guess that also makes it unlikely that Ben was in the coffin.

That seems likely. I've always been convinced it's not Sawyer, because they clearly want us to think it is.

But how did they end up working for him? This is getting pretty crazy! I guess that also makes it unlikely that Ben was in the coffin.
Now I'm down to Locke, Sawyer, and Michael as my main suspects (with Juliet in the mix).

I'm ruling out Sawyer, as Kate's reaction would be different even if she was pissed at him. Then again, I would never have imagined Ben running Sayid's life off the island.

So we've seen Jack, Kate, Sayid, and Hurley off the island with Sayid and Hurley referring to themselves as part of the "Oceanic Six". I don't think Ben fits into that group because he wasn't on the plane. If I'm correct that means that we still find out two more people who left the island, and if I'm wrong about Ben, then one more person.

At the end of the last season we saw Kate off the island, but in this episode she changed her mind while talking to Sawyer.
