Actually, I am doing a little bit of 4, 5, and 6, but 4 is the primary driving force.

What do you mean not getting a G5? Do I look crazy? My current box is 5 years old!
Is this a good place for an argument?

I got a dual gig a year ago, June, and when the "announced" machines turned out to not be "shipping" for 2 1/2 months, I decided to upgrade my G4 450 to a 1.25 instead, because I needed it faster right then, and it was a fraction of the cost of buying new.

I'm probably at least a year away from needing new hardware, at this point.

After getting a first-hand look at a 1.8 G5 Tuesday, I've certainly got the "wants," but I just can't justify it when there's nothing wrong with my current setup.

Quark is iffy on a G5, and VPC doesn't work yet -- two major strikes. Then there's the lack of Panther. Then there's all the other stuff that doesn't quite work that I don't even know about.

And then there's Job's comment about 3 Ghz in a (relatively) short time. It all adds up to rev.B for me.

Because I have no money and I just ordered a 12". But if I had the cash I would get one as well. I'll probably buy a G5 when they get them in the PowerBooks. It will be a Rev. B though.

I think you left out the most common reason that people aren't "getting" G5 PowerMacs:

"Because I placed my order nearly 3 months ago and I'm still waiting for the stupid thing to ship."

My system isn't BRAND new, it's about a year and a half old...

I have to get at LEAST three years out of it before I upgrade (I don't make enough to buy one every other year or every year)

If I had added that one then the results would be highly skewed.

I was going to get a G5, but I found an awesome deal on a Dual G4 1.42 demo at CompUSA: $2050 including Applecare.

I still question whether I did the right thing, but I do love this new G4.

I voted for "Waiting for Rev. 2" even though it's only part of the reason. The rest is that I'm on a 3-year upgrade schedule and it'll be 3 years this November. So a rev. 2 machine next January.

I am waiting for a G5 Powerbook.

I had a BTO G5 dualie on order for weeks, but cancelled and bought a Ti a few months back as I really needed a machine and couldn't wait for the Powermac to ship.

Anyway, I am blown away by the Ti... it goes everywhere with me, and has opened loads of new dimensions to my computing life and made it one whole lot easier...

So, in about 1 - 1.5 years time, or when ever they appear, I will first in line to buy a Rev B G5 Powerbook...

Peace,

Marc

Mostly 4 but throw in a bit of 5 and 6.

I also am under 1 but that is to replace my TiG4 in a few years.

Ordered 7/1, still not shipped.

Upgrading from PM 450 (single processor). Was thinking about buying last year, but then I heard rumors of this new magical G5, glad I waited.

Now, ship the thing already.

Much as I *want* one, I can't really justify the expenditure, considering the kind of work I do. Also, I really like the way my G4 system looks. I know others have said this before - if there was a monitor that looked REALLY GOOD with the perforated, brushed aluminum of the G5, I might decide I *needed* a new system. But every time I go past the Apple store I leave drool and fingerprints on the front window by the G5 display. -sigh-

She's too happy!

TOO LARGE!!!

I'm clinging to the Cube and a PB 12" until they come up with a headless, compact pro machine with AGP 8x (or whatever).

This might be a long wait.

Collecting some money as a student with a shortage of money. And maybe, in a Rev B model, Panther will be included

1. VirtualPC doesn't run on it. It's alot easier to keep around my different VPC test environments then it is to set up a real PC with mutilboot. I know, keep a 12" around to do those tests.

2. I want a 23" Cinema display first. This costs as much as a G5!

1. Seems like a lot of money ($3400 Canadian for a 1.8 G5). I've had many loveable Macs but I still have to pause when I see that I'll have to pay mega bucks more (ca $1000 more) for the latest Mac than for the latest and greatest PC (which I will never buy incidentally).

2. Everything else seems out of wack. I want Panther OS but I don't want to pay $200 CDN for an upgrade in 3-4 months. This is a significant upgrade for the G5. My understanding is that this will speed up a G5 by 40-45%. Therefor, why not just wait for 3 months until they're shipping with Panther.

3. I want to buy Adobe Photoshop. This too is scheduled for a new release before the end of the year. Another reason to wait!

4. I was thinking about about the highly regarded Samsung 172T as a monitor for my G5. Then I heard about the new 173P, which is apparently incredibly better and scheduled for release in October sometime.

5. I am bugged by the fact that next August a Dual 2Ghz G5 will probably sell for about he same price as a single processor G5 1.6...

6. Having said all that, I will probably opt for a 1.8 sometime in December provided Apple sweetens the pot a little with a Christmas promotion!

Waiting for Rev B

For couple of reasons:

1) Panther preinstalled

2) Gets the Rev A bugs solved

3) Maybe more dual cpu config available

4) My budget for spending usually is planned in every March.

1. Seems pointless to buy it now if panther is just around the corner.

2. Can't decide between a G5 1.6 and 17" Studio display, or new 15" PowerBook. (both going to be around the same )

3. Can't afford one until after Xmas anyway - just starting a new job, so will hopefully have saved up enough by then.

My 1ghz TiBook is less than a year old and I plan on getting at least 2-3 years out of the thing. Also I don't think I could go back to a desktop after enjoying the freedom that a laptop gives you.

I've had my laptop everywhere from boring places like the desk at home to uni lectures. to more extreme places like the tops of house roofs and half way up transmission towers.

Well I have a G4 cube which I love and I can't imagine parting with ever.... but, I just ordered a Dual G5 stacked and am giving the cube to my sister. I might want it back one day just to stare at

For me it is not worth waiting 6-8 months for rev b.

Wait for Panther, wait to see if OpenGL scene improves for pro 3d.

Also, wait to see if a dual can be had closer to $3000 than $4000 by the time you put drives i it and get the ram into the 2-4GB range via 3rd party vendors.

So prolly a Rev B, or just move my 3d to a PC and ride herd on my dual G4/800 until I just can't stand the sluggish UI anymore...

My G4 500 can do everything I need it to do, and I can't cost justify spending money for wants. It'll be getting a CPU upgrade by the end of next summer, and it's already got 1.25GB of ram, 160GB of hard drive space, and a radeon 8500.
Also, I don't like the lack of expansion, it's rev A (*points at rev A B&W G3 and rev A Tibook*), from what I've heard it's too loud, and did I mention I'm broke?
Besides, my Ti550 is my day to day machine.

When the G5's were announced, Apple marked the price of G4 tower waaaay down. I was able to pick up a Dual 1.25 G4 brand new from Apple.com for $1443. Plus I sold my generously loaded Dual 533 G4 on ebay for $1000. So instead of paying a fortune for a G5, I paid about $600 for a super fast G4 (added 1 GB of RAM and a second 80 GB HD so it runs of a super fast 160 GB RAID).

Humm, let me think. Oh yeh, There is no way I hav that sort of cash right now!

It will be ages before I can get a G5. I only managed to get my current Quicksilver duel GhzG4 because it was a ex demo machine that thad been sitting around the store with a 'sale' tag on it for 3 months after the MDD's where available (and sitting next to it). I wouldn't want to swap this ex-range topper with a bottom of the range G5 'just to keep up'
