All of that flurry of activity surrounding the shutdown was too dramatic. I'm glad we're back to having no one post.

In all honesty, I probably would have started contributing again if there had been a wholesale migration over to Reddit - I spend a decent amount of my on-mobile free-time there, so it would've been easy to re-connect.

Unless I'm mistaken, the 'NN forums are still pretty mobile un-friendly.

Since I spend a fair amount of time on Reddit, a RedditNN wouldn't be the worst thing, and the mobile app is functional, but the Reddit model is so, I dunno... ephemeral?

It would have essentially killed (temporally) long-form discussion. All my best threads are of that variety.

Because I only visit here on mobile, and have for years now, I'm just used to it not being mobile optimized.

Mobile Reddit is fine unless you think iOS is fugly.

It's 1.0, so it's got plenty of issues, but appearance isn't one.

I started via RSS, so I could avoid the site as long as I didn't care about comments.

RSS was murdered (probable solution: Generalissimo Page, in the server room, with a chain), and I went searching for a mobile option.

I should point out that's the app.

I edited my post to make this clearer.

I used the app for about two minutes and went back to Alien Blue. Imgur is getting worse and the Reddit app is designed to let Imgur be worse.

This, exactly. It has no replacement for long form threads between just a few people.

When did you try it?

The 1.0 forced you to actually forced you to go to Imgur. They fixed that.

Alien Blue is still better for porn.

Right when it came out. Maybe I'll try again.

It's very weird with AirPlay - pictures or gifs previously opened up in Alien Blue (but not currently open on the phone's screen) will sometimes get thrown up on the screen when AirPlay is initiated. Depending on what was last viewed, that could get embarrassing.

Yeah... that could be awkward.

While I'm an AirTunes devotee, I never use AirPlay so haven't run into the problem.

Opening the Political Forum really killed the Lounge, didn't it? Perhaps if it had been seperate, rather than accessed through the Lounge, it wouldn't have attracted so many of the wrong types to the Lounge (and thereby triggering the exodus).

People argue about what happened yesterday, let alone 14 years ago, but the thought could be that talking politics attracted shitty, petty, argumentative people. That led to heavy-handed moderation to try and counteract the shitty people and long, drawn-out arguments spilling into every area of the forum, which caused normal, fun people to get caught in the crossfire - either constantly blasted with obnoxious political arguments, or fun, harmless banter was over-moderated to the point where people left.

When I started looking into the stuff I got infractions over, it was the pettiest shit, and sometimes it was a joke that both people involved were in on and appreciated, but moderation decided deserved corrective action.

Here's what's confusing me.

I'm trying to imagine you at maximum hostility vs. someone like CRASHHARDDRIVE.

Now, CRASH and I finally saw eye to eye, and I like the guy, but his hostility level was off the hook. You'd just as soon try and parley with a rhino.

If you were getting dinged for petty shit, how did someone like him even survive here?

You'd have to ask the moderators of the time what the strategy was. "Infractions" didn't even get introduced until...what...2006 or 2008 or something? Before that, it was double secret probation then seemingly random bans, done entirely per moderator whims. Infractions were an attempt to formalize crimes and punishments, but by 2008 I'd wager that forum activity was already on the downslide.

I guess, in my mind at least, they put the brakes on the moderation at some point... say, five years ago*, but the exodus kept happening.

That was the poorly made point I was trying to make about CRASH. He survived the purge, but split anyway.

*I want to say once Railroader got ganked, beyond admonitions particular threads need to cool out, public moderation ceased. Has a regular been permabanned since then?

When Rob first left in 2001 he complained about how much this place sucked compared to what it used to be. I think there were like three epic threads in 2000 and then everyone has been reminiscing about "those days" for the past 16 years. Nostalgia's a bitch.

Freudling was banned, that may have been the last.

I remember Freudling taking a hardline "teh mods violate freedom of speech" position.

I don't know if it got him banned, but it couldn't have helped.

Besson is around, posted earlier today in the PWL.

Freudling had a tendency to explode when needled. The things that actually crossed the line were in PMs, so you wouldn't have seen them. He then tried to evade the ban a few times.

You're right, there was a guy who mostly commented on the news. I don't think we saw him in the lounges ever, but he managed rack up quite a post count in the news forums.
