Ok i know next to nothing about file serving so im going to need a lot of help. What i want to do is set up my G4 as a file server so people can click on a link and simply download whatever file is on that link. How would i got about doing this?

PS I know how to share files using personal file sharing but that is not what i want in this case, just a simple open your broweser, type in the address, and download a file from my computer.

Sounds like you actually mean a Web server. Just turn on web sharing in the Sharing preferences, and stick the files you want to share in /Library/WebServer/Documents, or ~yourname/Sites/

If you put files in /Library/WebServer/Documents then they would be available at
http://snuff.bc.edu/filename

If you put files in ~jsnuff/Sites then they will be available at
http://snuff.bc.edu/~jsnuff/filename

If you're at a ".edu" you should most likely be behind a firewall that doesn't permit external serving or filesharing, so this won't work.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.

Also, do you really need ~ and jsnuff? I thought the ~ simply meant the currently logged-in user...

yes you need the tilde (~) this is the default way that apache works.
i've seen installs where this isn't the case, and i imagine there is a way to change this, though that would be beyond the scope of this thread. so we won't go there.

edit....

as soon as apache i.e. web sharing is turned on, all users "Sites" folder will be active and each user's files will be accessible:

hostname/~user1/file.ext
hostname/~user2/file346b.ext

etc...

most college campuses that provide free webhosting for students have this same model, typically if you see a google search reveal a link such as:

blahblah/~someonesname/file.ext

it will be at a university somewhere, and the blahblah will have an .edu after it.

pointless comment ends here.
