this is a new one for me. my client gave me a quark document. when i go to open the fonts he sent (one of them is helvetica) i get the following error message:

there are fonts in the suitcase helvetica that conflict with fonts in the system folder. you must remove the fonts from the system fonts folder and restart before you can activate these fonts with suitcase.

wtf? anyone have this happen before?
anyone know what to do?

Welcome to the reason why Suitcase frustrates the hell out of me....

to get past that you need to allow suitcase to manage System fonts...

I think that is under the tools menu in suitcase (look for manage system fonts)...basically you need to disable the system helvetica to activate the version that you have...

be aware however that some apps (ical comes to mind) won't open if the system version of helvetica isn't activated...

mail and safari will just make your fonts look horrid (from what I can tell, they seem to shift the characters along alpha line a few steps- ie: a becones c, b becomes d, etc) sometimes. This is Suitcase, and I'm considering replacing system font with my postscript versions, but I have no idea what it will do. It seems logical it will resolve the issue, but I have no idea of how to resovle it if I reboot to a blank screen- I'm guessing it will resolve it- heres to a lost day if it doesn't, to ease of life if it does! If you want to try it, please post back, I'd love to hear.

Cheers,

Chris

If I recall correctly, you need to allow suitcase to manage system fonts in the prefs...

then you need to specify WHAT fonts it can manage under the tools menu.. put a check next to each font you want suitcase to manage.

this was my drill and I have repeated it with success.

delete the entire suitcase database
restart
goto manage system fonts
select all

turn off auto activation

create job sets and activate only what is needed. sounds like that is what you were directed to already. This was an area a huge frustration in January when some of the programs had not been updated yet and no one knew how to fix any of it.
