I honestly thought you had taste.
It had its rough edges, but some parts just hit home.

WHA?!?! That's sacrilege.

That's going on my netflix list...
He hasn't had a good track record, and that movie had some rough edges, but all things considered, I found it very entertaining.

Seriously, was that movie supposed to be bad? That girl playing the cop at the end was horrible and why was it black and white? Just for the sake of being more "artistic".

I think it's probably a combination of a lot of things that leads people to love, or loathe it. It had a low budget, it was his first picture (I think), and the nature for a new director/writer to perhaps try too hard. But in all of that lies the humour, the sharp observations of ordinary life.
The whole oral sex dialogue scenes still rip me up, I just laugh thinking of it. classic stuff.

I really liked the discussion on unionized Death Star workers.
But, really, how can anyone hate that movie. It was freaking hilarious. Wow, so many idio-- err ... people with different tastes than mine.

No, it was because he paid for it himself with as many credit cards as he and his family could get, and color film's expensive.

I guess he couldn't afford a real actress to play a cop either

It must be easy knocking a filmmaker's first movie from your chair. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?

I'm the same way...although when I first started watching Dogma, the first 1/4th of it seemed intriguing. Until it rapidly careened off the cliff of quality-film-material.

clerks is a great movie.
the best part is my ability to relate to the characters directly.
I worked in a Convenience Store for two years, and can appreciate the humor and the setting of the film. It was one of the first movies i really got into.

I thought "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" was supposed to be the final movie with the two characters. If Smith didn't say so, it certainly looked that way in the movie. Besides, the actors are getting too old for the part if you ask me.

Kevin Smith is awesome.
Anyhone see the special on STARS Network? It's a 4 hour special were he fields questions about his work and experiences with various people. I was up with my wife watching it until 2:30 am this morning. She never heard of the guy until she started watching this show, and she was enthralled!
I highly recommend it.
I particularly loved the part where Prince asked him to do a documentary of him....

Saw Clerks II tonight.
Funny though, right when it started and the film is black and white I heard a lady in the back say "Oh, Jesus, is the whole movie black & white?!". What an idiot.

i saw it too. it was... well, it was. amazing to think that a movie with a dance sequence set to a Jackson 5 song could make me cringe as many times as it did.
a lot of it really hit home. but i'm still not sure it was worth $9 though.
addendum: really nice to see sober jay.

It's been a long time since I saw Clerks, but I'm pretty sure it didn't make me laugh a single time. And Chasing Amy was some god-awful dreck that made me wish I could have my ~2 hours back to go check out some drying paint or something. Never seen anything else by Smith, but every quote I've heard or interview I've read made me want to punch him.
How anyone could compare his crap to the frickin' brilliant Office Space is beyond me.

Clerks was very funny in parts. Mallrats was great (not in an award-winning kind of way, but it was funny. And they played NHL 93 on a Sega Genesis.)
Since then, I haven't really loved any Kevin Smith movie. But I'm interested in Clearks 2. I'll go see it.

OTOH, I've genuinely liked all of the Smith movies and I find Office Space a tad overrated. In fact, I dare say it'd be pretty lackluster without Stephen Root.

Went to watch Clerks 2 last night. I liked it.
It didn't have that 'Clerks 1' feel to it, that cheapness, that rawness, that what-have-I-got-to-lose-ness of Clerks 1; which made me enjoy Clerks 1 even more. Clerks 2 feels more of 'regular' movie, but nevertheless it was still a good movie.
Surprisingly there were about 4 elderly couples watching when we went. Not surprisingly, they all left about halfway through.

Yeah - I saw the movie yesterday and there were a few times such as the dance sequence, the sappy love story stuff or the horribly, horribly predictable plot where I shrunk into my seat and wondered what the hell I was doing there.
I am a Kevin Smith fan - seen everything he's done, read his comics, etc. and there's always something, no matter how small, that's bugs me about each thing he does. I would say that Clerks II is about 60% good - the other 40% is "Hollywood Trite Smith" material, the likes that haven't been seen since Jersey Girl.
I had fun at the flic, Jay and Bob still crack me up and the dialogue of the movie was pretty good. If he puts another dance number into anymore movies, though, I am going to have to bitch slap him.

Just so you know, it is also out on DVD.
Kevin Smith is a real good story teller. Even those who really don't like Kevin Smith at a fan level seem to get something out of his stories. They are funny, he tells them very well and they are intriguing. His Prince story is classic. I also liked the story of him writing the Superman script and the Producer wanting the "Giant Spider in Act 3".
I believe there is another one of these "An Evening With Kevin Smith" coming out this Fall.

Meh. I've heard Smith talk and he always seems to have a charming amount of self-deprication but, usually, he's also making fun of the publisher, the studio, the critics, the actors or whomever else was associated with his most recent failure. I think he'd be more likable if he had a success once in a while
Speaking of, 'Clerks II' kinda tanked at the box office this weekend. It finished sixth behind 'Little Man,' which is in its second week of release. Ouch.

I saw him recently on Leno, pushing Clerks 2. His whole time on the show he told this story about how he had a massive "anal fissure" (huge hemorrhoid) and how he had to deal with it in a few different situations, like jury duty. It was friggin hilarious! It was definitely not what Leno's audience is used to hearing.
