i'm having this WEIRD safari download problem. i can surf the web fine, but when i want to download something (like a .zip or .sit or even a .mov) thats not already been downloaded (i can download the Macnn Logo for example) i get the beach-ball of doom and when i right click in the dock it says that the application is not responding. i can download things find in FireFox, so i think this is a Safari issue. does anyone know a fix or what the hell is wrong with my Safari?

I take it you have deleted Safari preferences? Caches? Reset Safari?
