Never the less, RAM is cheap right now!
Oh and if you turn in the 2x512's you get 11 bucks back. So 88, is not too shabby for 3GB.

I missed the really good deal on NewEgg a few days ago, and paid $140 for 2x2GB.

Dirt cheap, but I'll bet a gallon of RAM costs more than a gallon of gas....

Well, since the barrel crude oil(55 gallons) is around $100 now and 3Gb or two sticks is $99 i would probably be on your side of the bet. This doesn't even take into account that you have to process the oil before it becomes "gas".

I'm not seein' those-unless I'm looking at the wrong "Egg" that is. I am seeing 1X2GB for down to less than $60 at Newegg.

Alas, no such hot deals on older non-DDR2 memory for my Powerbook. It looks like it's about twice as much across the board.

I've ordered these and can't report on compatibility yet, but the price is right for Kingston.

Buy.com - Kingston 2GB PC2-5300 667MHZ 200-Pin SODIMM DDR2 Laptop Memory - KVR667D2SO/2GR

Only $1 less, but free shipping is another $8 savings here.

Wow !

Sales rank shot up to number 3 from 2460 the day before,
Must have been discovered as a good deal. No rebates either.

Usually nobody beats NewEgg, except now, even after rebates.

Newegg.com - Kingston 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - Retail

It's been two years since my last Mac and when I went to buy my MacBook last week I was planning on spending around $150 for memory, so I figured I'd have 2gb.
$160 later and I have 4gb in my MacBook

I've been getting a little frustrated as it appears there are two cost levels of RAM being sold. The normal Kingston RAM for Macbooks is about $107 for 2GB, almost double the cost of Kingston ValueRAM with the same spec. The difference in stock numbers is KVR for generic ValueRAM, or KTA for the more expensive Apple specific RAM.

I called Kingston and was told that the KTA is tested specifically for Apple and that Apple computers look for certain components on RAM chips which may or may not be present on the generic ValueRAM.

Can anyone call BS on this story or is there a real difference? Not just for Kingston but any RAM supplier?

'Mac RAM' is always BS. And the saddest part is that a great number of Mac owners are stupid enough to fall for it; hence why they keep getting away with it.

The only thing you may get with name-brand RAM is more rigorous testing. Testing costs money, and you can be sure the low-cost vendors are not doing as much of it. But then again, you can't really be sure that the high-end vendors are doing a better job at it, either. And if you buy from a reputable place, they'll take back RAM that's bad, anyway, even if it's not a big brand. Just make sure you get a god RAM test program and weed out the bad RAM while you can still return it.

All DRAM chips come from the same five or six DRAM makers, anyway. It used to be seve, but I think there have been a few mergers.

Ok, I know this question is a little N00bish, but if I get this ram (2 of them) I can just flip over my macbook, take out the two 512's in there now, and then put both of these in? No fuss?

This thread has officially convinced me to max out my macbook to 2 gigs. From newegg, it was less than $50 shipped. I remember a year ago or so when I was looking at it, I think it was closer to $150ish. And from Apple, it was like $300 or something???

Definitely stoked, thanks OP for getting me thinking about this again!

I agree, with a few exceptions. Some Macs (in the G4 days) only supported lower density chips when higher density chips were more common, while others were simply picky about something (possibly timings; you can find modules on the egg where lots of people report them not working in a PowerBook while they work fine in x86 systems).

Oh wow, the new macbooks ship with 1 GB stock. I was going to take one of my extra 512's and put it in my moms new macbook, but I see she already has 2 X 512 in there. I remember not too long ago iBooks came with 256 stock and people were begging for the upgrade to 512, i missed the jump to 1 gb.

When I got my macbook, I bought an extra 512 stick because it only came with 512. When I get the 2 X 1GB sticks next week, what should I do with my 2 X 512's? I can't imagine I'd get much selling them on ebay...or would I? Any tips?

You could do what I'm gonna do when my MacBooks show up: give 'em to the neighborhood guy with a pile of computers in his garage/basement/bedroom. My recipient might wind up making money off them, or he might put 'em in a box he'll just give away. But for me, it's worth giving up whatever cash I could've gotten for them to avoid more clutter.. Got too many things I don't need sitting around my house already.

Sorry to bring back this zombie thread, but anybody looking at this RAM... DO NOT GET IT! After a few crappy weeks of figuring out what the hell is wrong with my macbook, it seems the RAM has been the culprit all along. I had to search for this thread to find exactly what kind I got.

We should invade Japan - that would cause the price of RAM to increase....

Question though, doesn't using unmatched pairs make the computer slower than if you used a matched pair? i.e. using a 1GB and a 2GB to get 3GB instead of using two 2GB sticks to get 4GB? I have the older MacBook that only allows 3GB and am tempted, but don't know whether to get 3GB or just 2GB.

Dual channel is faster for games (since it's used for VRAM), more memory is faster for general usage.

Bingo.

Took it into the Apple store, they wouldn't even look at it with "Transcend" RAM in there. Really regret getting rid of those old chips!
