Now that the Time Capsule is out, and no firmware updates from Apple to the Airport Extreme N, is it official that Apple screwed the AEN buyers over?

No. But if it's not fixed by 10.5.3, then we've been screwed.

The update would come to the AENs, not OS X. OS X can already backup to a AirDisk (see: Time Capsule). I can only think that Apple would need to update the firmware, I keep checking everyday.

Are we sure it's just a software issue that can be fixed with a firmware update ?
Maybe they had to make a hardware change to TimeCapsule to make it happen.
