need to find out what sort of video file I have

is there a piece of software out there that will tell me exactly what sort of video file i have. when i was using windows it used to tell me if it was mpeg1 or mpeg2 or an xvid file by just right clicking and selecting properties

Open it up in quicktime and get info about it.

thanks for that. quicktime says it does not understand the file though.

Try opening it in VLC and get info (Cmd-I).
