From a psychology perspective, why are the Mel Gibson tapes so funny

Why is it the more angry, racist, self destructive, idiotic, and disgusting these rants are, the harder we laugh? I always thought it was kinda strange, that it evokes the polar opposite response.

I think he's a great director (passion and Apocalypto), it difficult to have a look into his private life and see how frustrated he can be. Seems like a controlfreak who dates the wrong women. Frustrations lead to his alcoholism, then you get to see his darkest side with the antisemitism and racism. Not totally unexpected though. I think there a lots more people who have a dark inner self that opens up from time to time.
I'm sure he is just an unhappy person who feels insecure, otherwise I cant explain his actions. I mean, who else is angry about jews and 'minorities', they (racists) all have a problem with themselves in the first place.

It's funny (perplexing? pointless?) to me because its so ridiculous and out of scope with reality. It's also funny because he gets so exasperated, huffing and puffing, which does nothing be show how powerless he is against his own rage.
I'm also struck by how he has "everything" in the traditional American sense (money, fame, and some level of adoration) yet he's still just as screwed up as anyone else. It shows he's just as human as anyone else.
Would this be an example of Schadenfreude?

This is a left-wing double standard in action. If he were a democrat, all would be forgiven (eg: Roman Polanski).

This post has made me dumber just for reading it.
From a phycology perspective, why is it so funny?

I love how the thread in the PL somehow didn't mention politics, but three posts into the reg lounge someone drops partisan politics in with all the grace of leaving a flaming bag of dog shit at someone's front door.
---
Also, I haven't listened to the tapes, but I don't find the transcripts funny. I'm in the minority, but I don't find the behavior of unhinged people entertaining.

You need to listen to the actual tape for full effect. The huffing and puffing and dramatic pauses are what really make it. But before you listen, you should blow me.

Would anyone like to hazard a guess at what Mr Gibson does for a living?
Perhaps his career comes with a Llama?

Pity. It made the tapes sound much more interesting and random. Crackpot phycology tapes from a celebrity would be a hoot. "And now, we get to the seaweed. I've found that prayers during low tide work best, causing the holy weed to smoke especially well when the tide washes it in."
Anyway, it's fixed.

We laugh when we’re nervous, or usually during a WTF moment. It helps to release the stress of those moments.

Mr. Rogers projected an air of genuine, unwavering, almost saintly pure-hearted decency. But when you look deeper, at the person behind the image ... that's exactly what you find there, too. He's exactly what he appears to be.

Stupid post, but makes a decent point towards the subject. Can you separate the art from the artist? Should you? Is a shared political ideology enough?
