OK I just iunstalled Panther on my Dad's cube 450. Upon reboot the finder comes up and Mail and iChat launch. After about 15 seconds they both fail and then the Finder quits and constantly tries to re-launch. After another reboot the Finder is stable, but apps fail. After another reboot Finder is stable, and I can run Address Book and Explorer. Another reboot and everything fails, Finder is cycling again. I ran fsck - nothing, repaired permissions, nothing... The error I get is an exception of type: EXEC_BAD_ACCESS - I would cut and paste the full error dialog, but there is no Finder to cut and past.... What a bitch.. This is the third time I have installed panther on 3 different machines, and they have all given me crap.

Any ideas?

Get some replacement discs or try upgrading the install to 10.3.2.

How can I upgrade to 10.3.2 if the finder does not work and apps fail?

I have some more information about what the error message is:

I know that this is a lot of information that means very little to most people here, but there it is FWIW.

It does this for all apps. I was able to get the Finder and iChat to stay stable, but nothing else works. I have never seen a system with issues like this...

I guess I will have to do a clean install :-( but that pisses me off. As I have said this is the 3rd botched install - all of which I have had to fix with a clean install, which is not too bad, but jesus. I am lucky I am experienced, and can handle this myself - if I was a newbie I woudl be out some $$$ cause I would ahve to take it into the store...

Just did a clean install... Same problem. Finder comes up, then some login apps launch then they fail, then the finder fails. I tried pulling the ram... Same problem. Checked firmware version... I am up to date.

WTF?

I have just ruined my father's Cube!

Are you using the same install discs for all 3 machines? It sounds like they're focked. You're pretty much all alone, with what you're describing, so chances are it's the media. That's why I suggested updating, as that may correct the problem.

After rereading, it looks like you're trying to do a sneaky install, so you may be out of luck.

If you do multiple installs on a machine and it acts like you describe, chances are huge that you either have bad disks or bad memory.

Make copies of the discs and try to install from those copies.

You mean where he wrote this: " I am lucky I am experienced, and can handle this myself - if I was a newbie I woudl be out some $$$ cause I would ahve to take it into the store."

I don't see it as a reference to piracy, but simply that he means that if he couldn't do the installs himself he would have to take it into the store. The cube is not under warranty any more, AFAIK.

Move your Preferences folder out of Home/Library and restart. You should now have default settings for everything - and if you still experience wierdness you may have some difficult problems.

The above worked for me when I fist installed Panther, as I was getting continuous Finder restarts.

I've installed panther on about 10 machines so far and have never seen any of them launch Mail and iChat after the restart. My guess would be that he's trying to copy a Panther install from another machine. I call that sneaky. Maybe I'm wrong, though. Maybe there's a better explanation why removing the user prefs would solve the problem.

Glad it's all working now.

Mail and iChat were login items. The issue was not that they were launching, but that they would crash with a message that I have listed above. This would happen with almost all apps - the weird thing was that this happened intermittently.
I was not trying to clone an install from another machine, - I was installing from the CDs...

What he means is that you tried to install Panther using CD-R copies of install discs that were bundled with another Mac instead of paying $129 or whatever it is to buy Panther retail.

I guess he's suggesting that the Panther install discs for some newer Macs won't play nice with your dad's Cube and therein lies your problem.

No, actually, I reckoned that he was trying to clone Panther from another machine, hence the odd preferences. From his first post, I thought he meant that Mail and iChat auto-launched on the 1st restart after install.
If you're getting this stuff happening from Apple install discs, then definitely exchange them for new ones, just in case.

Oh, you mean, just dragging the System Folder from another machine and dropping it onto the hard drive of the Cube? Hmm...you are def. right - that would not be a wise option.

Doesn't Panther verify and optimize the hard disk during the instrall process?
