The connector is too tight to pull off with my fingers, and I don't want to squish it with the wrong kind of pliers. What would you guys recommend?

In the past I have used a micro flat blade screwdriver to gently wiggle this style of connector up from each end until its high enough and lose enough to remove with your fingers.

Too tight? Are you sure you are pulling it absolutely straight up? That connector should not be that difficult to disconnect.
