I've been reading product descriptions and it doesn't mentioned that it would be mac compatible. I need to backup my failed laptop's hard drive onto my desktop.

You're fine just as long as it fits the drive size and type (e.g., 2.5" SATA), plus has the port your Mac supports (USB being the best example).

But post some you're thinking about and we can double-check.

Grasroots computer is having a nice deal on a 320HDD + USB-SATA adapter.

Insert the bad hard drive in the USB enclosure and try mounting it in the desktop.
If that fails, use photorec/testdisk in a Ubuntu PC.

I'd suggest looking into a 3.5"/2.5" USB SATA dock SATA Dock Station Turns Bare HHD Into USB Drive

Agreed. I gave up on using the cable solution.

I use one of these: Voyager by NewerTech- Hard Drive Dock for 3.5" and 2.5" SATA Devices provides high-performance and flexibility
