Ok, OS X user since the 10.0.4 days.

Updated my black MacBook to 10.5 these past Christmas, bought a copy at the local Apple store.

Once installed, mixed feelings. My laptop loaded slower, more beach ball, unresponsive. Over time thing got better, probably because caches of already done tasks were speeding things up.

However, reliability issues started, applications crashing and so on, then sleeping problems and finally kernel crashes.

Right now iWeb and Safari do not load anymore, the finder crashes constantly, disk utility took forever to complete the repairing task, it claims "warming SUID file" (9 of them), plus some other things...it seems like a mess.

10.4 was flawless.

I'm writing this using explorer in windows XP in the bootcamp partition, can OS X go lower than that?

"warming SUID file" is not an issue. That's normal.

I don't know whether you just wanted to rant or looking for help, so I hold off with troubleshooting advice. Posting the crash logs might be a good start for this though.

Yes, I've been seriously posting in these forum since 2001 and now I'm just gonna ruin it. I'm serious, 10.5 is disapointing me so far. At ;least now, I'm back in OS X but finder keeps crashing, using firefox, safari does not work.

The fact is, 10.5 is giving me a heck of a hard time and there's nothing wrong with saying it. I'm well aware that 10.4.11 was a very polished piece of software and 10.5.1 is still figuring out some bugs. Logs.

Thanks in advance

All right, you love repairing permissions. I figured this from your original post already. The thing is: except in some rare circumstances that's an inept troubleshooting procedure.

Instead do an "Repair Disk" (not the "Repair Disk Permissions" button!) and see whether it reports any file system issues. If that is fine, then post a recent and typical crash log (from ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter). That might give a hint towards what the problem is.

That is the log out I got.

Anytime the computer freezes I do not get any info on what's going on wrong

Staring up in vervose mode seems to work, although takes ages to load entirely

Once it crashes again, I'll give you as much feed back as I can, but for now I'm actualizing my back up.

a) Do a "Repair Disk" from Disk Utility. What does it say?
b) Try another user. Do the problems persist?
c) Boot from the hardware diagnostics disk. Does it report any problems?
d) Post a typical crash log which can be found in the directory I mentioned above.

OK, in my case I'm so pissed off.

Everything is crashing here, I cannot even back up!

10.5 is a piece of ****, I installed it on my brother's MacBook Pro and just asked how his experience so far was, although stable it does several annoying things such as beach ball showing up a lot, slowness, etc

On the meanwhile, I have not clue what's wrong and Apple support just doesn't help.

I'm so moving back to 10.4 as soon as I back it up.

Boot from the system DVD and "Repair Disk". Since you can't even back up it seems you have a disk drive problem.

Yes i know
But I'll have to do it from the 10.4 disk

I live in the Netherlands and during the holidays my brother and I bought 10.5. the copy was left back home...

I hope the repair disk in 10.4 can solve the problem, I'll have to do it when I'm back home tonight though...

Although safari and iweb do not run, some others seem to do fine. Yesterday was even worse, I had to move to windows which pissed me off way too much, thus my mean post.

I'm just not used to OS X failing, I thought that 10.5 was better.

You have been following my case, and I do appreciate the efforts, thanks.

The fact that you can't do a Repair Disk is because you have to boot from the Leopard install CD. You can't do it from your own boot drive. I think you have a serious directory problem, not a Leopard problem. Try this:
Boot in Single user mode, restart, hold down the Apple key and the letter <s>.
You will be rewarded with a scary black and white screen. On the screen you will see
/sbin/fsck -fy
type that in, make sure there is a space after fsck.
Rinse and repeat until the screen log says that no changes were made.
Type in "reboot" when it is done.

Hose out your font caches: reboot, hold down the Shift key until you see your login screen with the words "Safe Mode". Release the Shift key. Log in. There will be turds in your Trash, those are the font caches. Empty the Trash, restart normally.

Ok,

Hardware was tested, it is ok
Disk was repaired from install disk, volume is ok
I hosed out caches too

Everything seems fine

Safari does not work still, iWeb fails, I could only back up partially.

No clue what to do next, but there's something very wrong in the system

If I could only back up 100%, I would return to 10.4. That would be fine for me, 10.5 is just not ready no matter what Jobs said today about the 5 million guys updating, I've seen way too many reports of problems and my own experiences confirm it. Damn idea I had when I decided to waste 120 euros....

No... there are not "way too many reports of problems".
MacFixIt 10.5 forum (and other sites) are not unusually
crowded. If that were true, we would all know it and be
experiencing similar issues. If you did a *clean* install,
then maybe we can do some troubleshooting. Okay... I
see you did a clean install (I missed it scrolling past that
10000 lines of unnecessary log file). Whatever the reason
for your Safari trouble, it's not a general Leopard problem.
Else, everyone would have it.

Not knowing that we have to boot from another disk in order to
*repair* the HD indicates that you are somewhat new to all this.

Typically, Safari 3.x problems are caused by Input Managers and
other Safari "enhancement" add-on software. You got any of that?

Man I just come here asking.

If people asks for the logs, I provide them, if they are way too long or unnecesary I agree, but that's the system output.

I was doing disk repair from an external FW drive in which my system is cloned (so I can reboot and use it as a disk repair). Still, for wherever reason it was failing, arriving home and using the original 10.4 install DVD finally help me to confirm that the volume is fine.

I get constant finder crashes and beach ball lags. There's black screen when I boot or shut down the system (no time to record the tasks the system performs while it happens), then it finally loads or shuts down. I'm sure safari problems are related, but safari failing is not responsible for all this mess. Even the airport was not recognized after I checked hardware, restarting fixed it.

Many different things falling.

I know there were problems when 10.5 come out the fact that there was an update was a reason for me to upgrade, I thought most bugs would have been short out. My mistake.

The fact is 10.5 doesn't run properly, is slow, and crashes, because there's people suggesting solutions, I keep trying but so far no fixes. The scenario of moving back to 10.4 increases.

Fair enough if you think I'm new or unexperienced, I'm not really pleased in the way I'm handling this. But I have supported a very fair amount of Macs since OS 8.5 and never found something that resisted being fixed so much. The IT department at my research institute is as puzzled as I am. Just that. 10.5 is not impressing me, much more on the contrary. My brother feed back and some networking/printer problems with the new iMac in my institute suggest that at least around me, 10.5 is cursed.

But I want to emphasize that I appreciate very much your feed back. These problems just come in a very bad moment.

I just realized that iWeb loads but cannot connect to .Mac

"iWeb couldn’t connect to .Mac. Make sure your Internet connection works and try again."

Same for ASafari that loads (both very slowly) but cannot connect...Firefox, Mail, Skype and Adium can. A smoking gun?

I've seen this happen since Carbon Copy Cloner was released. It seems that any "clone" (made with any app) can become confused when a user boots from it and tries to repair the original. Okay maybe it works fine 9 times out of 10... but every once in a while it doesn't. Something on the clone sees itself as "connected" to the original, and thus won't allow (or can't properly complete) a repair. The best way to create a bootable emergency repair volume is to install the OS using the DVD. (Partitioning can be useful in such cases).

Sounds like verbose booting maybe. Have you used Cocktail (or OnyX, etc.), to enable special features, or otherwise modify things?

As far as the other stuff, all I can say is: unless there's a hardware problem, if that were my black MacBook... I'd have it purring along with Leopard in no time. There's gotta be something non-Apple in there somewhere, stinking up the deal.

LOSE IT. Get rid of all 3rd-party tweaks!!!
Later on you can add them... slowly, one at a time.
[make *sure* they're Leo-compatible first though.]

Ok, I cleared all safari plug-ins, It didn't fix anythin.

Then, because I set it up like that, the software update tried to run today and it couldn't:
"A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again. - Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem."

This, no doubt in my mind, is related to Safari not working, iWeb unable to connect to .Mac. iTunes cannot connect to the iTunes store, or radio, but the rest, apparently it works well.

However, iChat, adium firefox, skype seem to work well.

I have no clue what's going on.

I know these logs are long, but if anybody finds anything weird, let me know.

If not, I'm moving back to 10.4 tonight as soon as i figure out how to back up all my data

Thanks

Did you try booting with the shift key held down as well as logging in with the shift key held down? This way any potentially incompatible system extension will not be loaded. You should be able to back up all your data then.

Then do a format and install of Leopard and don't use Migration Assistent to import your user account. Create the a fresh new user and grab your user data manually from your backup. And don't install third party system additions.

You will see that Leopard works just fine (unless there is some hardware defect on your Mac).

Hi guys,

I got a new external drive, back up everything (finally!), did a clean leopard install. Manually, I've been importing the data from the ext drive.

Most applications have been downloaded from the official sites, etc. Four days in which my computer worked flawlessly.

Ok, I downloaded VLC an hour ago to see a movie, a compressed .avi movie I saw some time ago with no problem in 10.4. Ok, VLC 0.8.6 keep crashing. Ok, I decided to see another movie this one in .mp4 format using Quicktime. After 5 minutes, the application crashes and incredibly a kermel panic occurred. Nice fancy text in serveral lenguages asking me to restart the computer.

Nice, really nice, is this a kind of a joke? Leopard is nothing but trouble. What a piece of ****.

It sounds more like like a hardware defect. Probably defective RAM.

I agree, and bad RAM will *often* pass the diagnostic tests.

Well, I passed the ahrdware test again, no problems were found.

Te fact is I have used 2 GB RAM for over a year now running 10.4, never had a kermel panic...

That doesn't mean the RAM hasn't gone bad. Do you have a different chip you can put in your machine?

It's my opinion that for *some* reason, leopard can reveal flaws that tiger glossed over.

Take out one memory module and run with 1GB for some time. See whether you get kernel panics. Then put back in that memory module and take out the other and again run for some time.

If you get kernel panics with one but not the other, then it's the memory.

... and rest assured that most probably Leopard will keep on crashing, so that you'll be able to use all your RAM pretty quickly again (since Leo crashes anyway).
I had similar experiences, getting up to 6 OS crashes or more specifically freezes per day, on a clean Leo install (new harddrive). After re-installing, Leo behaved for about two weeks, before beginning to crash/freeze again.

Interestingly and incredibly, there have been no freezes in the last week or so, even though I have changed absolutely nothing whatsoever after the last crash, and certainly have not done any more of the silly voodoo people keep recommending.

I hope you'll get your Leopard to run as it should, Cenutrio. When it works, it's beautiful. When it doesn't... well, let's say that for me 10.5 was the worst OS X release by Apple since the public beta.

See also these threads on Apple Discussions: Leo is Crashy, crashy and leopard hangs - have to power off - force quit doesn't work, among others.

No Leopard crashes here, AT ALL - in six weeks.

None.

Not one.

MacBook Core 2 Duo, Archive & Install.

as well as

iMac G5 (iSight) 1.8 GHz.

I did take care to update all my drivers, though.

I have to admit that my Dual 2 GHz PowerMac G5 starts having loads of problems, like hanging, force quit not working anymore, most of the time have to hold power button to shut down.

Can't say Leopard is all that stable as Tiger.

(Oh yes, do I remember Conflict Catcher...from Casady & Greene, makers of Soundjam -> iTunes)

Well, it was certainly not the RAM, it took a couple days to get another crash.

Yes, in terms of stability 10.5 is a step backwards, to the OS 9 days

However, it is just my PowerMac. The MacBook and MacBook Pro do not suffer from it, there for I cannot say Leopard sucks, not at all, but I think we will get some serious bug fixes in 10.5.2 though)

I had been putting off upgrading from 10.4.11 for a long time but finally decided to purchase 10.5 and made sure to update to 10.5.5 right away (and all other software updates) . After reading this entire post I have a suggestion that REALLY would have saved cenutrio a lot of heartache, this would allow you to boot to 10.5 OR 10.4! PARTITION YOUR DRIVE! I only had an 80 GB Hard Drive in my iMac G5 1.8 1.25GB RAM and decided to upgrade the drive. I backed all the data on an external drive and popped a brand new Western Digital 1 TB (930GB in reality) in the iMac (you can get one for about $120) .

I PARTITIONED the drive in (2) equal partitions that came out to 465GB each. I installed 10.4.11 on Partition (1) and installed my programs and ran what I had been running normally, everything worked flawlessly. The difference since running my 80GB was this nice 465GB empty partition (2) waiting for the 10.5 when it arrived in the mail. So I just got my 10.5 yesterday and installed it, erased drive (why not? I had dumped some files there) , clean install, no migration assistant, etc. Leopard is very awesome looking and the features do seem to be worth the price BUT there are definite glitches.

I hooked up my USB 2 cable to my digital camera and was transferring some movies to my movies folder (like I've done a thousand times in 10.4.11 with no problems) and when I tried to click on the 10.4 partition during file transfer, the finder locked up, force quit showed in red finder not responding, I did a force quit, had to start transfer over, I thought "OK maybe an isolated problem" Well this happens EVERY TIME I am transferring files from my camera, I cannot multitask. I can open programs from the dock but finder is not accessible (beach ball when I click on Finder in dock). I decided to wait until the red light on the camera stopped flashing during one of these finder lock ups and I did hear the tone you hear when a file transfer is complete but still, I should be able to multitask while a file is transferring, this is not system 8! (BTW the first Mac I owned was a Powermac 7200 running system 7.5.3! And I've been through a lot of them since!).

When I drag the camera mount drive icon to the trash to eject it takes a long time to eject and a few times it never did and I had to just unplug it which brings up the dreaded unmount error message.

Firefox and Safari constantly crash even though I downloaded the most current versions fresh from the web. When I click on System Preferences, the blue dot lights up in the dock under the new "gears" icon, but the window usually does not come up. It shows it's open but there is no window. If I go>menu>quit and relaunch the window pops up? Weird?

There were a couple of other glitches too minor to remember but I'll come back to this post if I run into anything else. You would think by this time (October 2008) the 10.5.5 would be pretty solid!

So the moral of my story is, backup/partition/install old/install new. Now you can just boot to the old partition with 10.4.11 if 10.5 doesn't behave plus you can run disk first aid much easier without digging up your restore CD. If your drive is small if might not be the best option but hard drive prices are dropping.

Good Luck:
