No descriptions yet, here's a category up for discussion:

Motion graphics and VJing

Motion
Quartz Composer
Adobe After Effects
Pure data
Max MSP
Neuromizer
ES-X
Vidvox
Digitalstage
Flowmotion
Modul8
Quartonian
Isadora

Please add suggestions and feel free to come up with a short description if you're familiar with a particular software - I'll try to add some later.

Granted, some of these are not perhaps 'commonly used', but then it's just a case of truncating the list.

Congrats! That is a great post. Although you could add a new Chat program that can substitute MSN Messenger. It is called Mercury (Mercury - News) and it is great. Sometimes it shuts down, its a bug, but it works fine

If you include that, you should include Smultron, a very nice text editor geared to writing code (as is Textwrangler).
Euhm what about... iTunes, ShapeShifter, CandyBar, Cocktail, Quicksilver, Launchbar, Stuffit Expander and UnRar ?
You should include Mighty Mouse (the software to change the cursor), The Unarchiver, and BetterZip; also do not forget Onyx.
For playing sound files, there are Cog, QMidi, Audacity, and VLC (good for audio as well as video).

iText Express - Freeware has extended TextEdit's open source to let you control TextEdit's many buried features.

Features include, but are not limited, to adjustable margins, page layout, multiple columns, headers, footers, editable URLs, tables, styling, font lists, high lighting background colors, footnotes, line numbering, multi-media, tracking, baseline shift, etc. In fact it is capable of quick and dirty DTP and multi-media, whilst still a very capable basic text editor.

Audio Hijack Pro US$32 Indispensible if you want to record web radio or audio from any source whatsoever on your Mac. You can filter, schedule, automate your audio capture.

Along with the usuals (Mail, Safari, etc.), my two most commonly used applications are Bean (a free word processor better than iText or TextEdit, yet not bloated with features few will use) and Scrivener, the best app I've ever seen for writers; it makes organizing info and drafting stories (fiction, nonfiction, plays, screenplays) easier than anything I've ever used.

3D Modelling/Shading/Rendering:

Blender - GNU GPL comprehensively featured 3D software package

Wings 3D - Open source subdivision modeller

Cinema 4D - Commercial mid-range 3D software package

Carrara - Commercial mid-range 3D software package

Zbrush - Pro level digital sculpting tool

Maya - Pro level 3D software package used by the film, TV and video game industry

There are many others of course, but the above should be a decent start.

File System:

MacFUSE - OS X compatible binary of FUSE. Provides a fully functional file system in a user space. With appropriate plugins, you have read & write access to sshfs (SFTP), NTFS, ftpfs (FTP), wdfs (WebDAV), cryptofs, encfs, bindfs, unionfs, beaglefs, GmailFS, etc.
NTFS-3G - NTFS plugin for MacFUSE. Read & Write NTFS support.

FTP & SFTP:

MacFusion - Free, and very nice GUI for MacFUSE. Mount FTP & SSH/SFTP sessions right on your desktop like Finder, except fast. Absolute must-have for any Mac user that uses FTP & SFTP on a regular basis.

Not too sure how commonly used this application is, but I'll share anyways. I recently got a copy of "MacLife" and found this software referenced inside. GeekTool is a cool little preference pane that will post Unix commads, Log files or images onto your desktop. I used it for a little while, it was cool to see my "Uptime" and other little commands.

Right, here’s my personal take on this thread as it seems get a bit dusty but new mac people still use it as a reference.

First of all, what’s with the order of applications? is it random or are the most recommended and popular applications listed first (which is how it should be in my eyes, but it isn’t).

It would be cool if you could repost the whole sticky in here so we can quote it and post edited versions in here. That would save you from doing all the formatting. The original sticky is closed and can’t be quoted by regular users for that reason.

View video files:

Mplayer - does anyone really use this over Quicktime and/or VLC? If so, why? voting for remove.
Quicktime should be #1, mention Perian with it.
Windows Media Player - replaced by/renamed to Flip4Mac, is a QT plugin now.
RealPlayer - ouch. this is 2008 folks!

Do some type of file transfers:

http://extendmac.com/flow/ should be added.
http://filezilla-project.org/ should be added.
Cyberduck Link is broken.
Personal opinion: Transmit should be #1, Cyberduck #2, Flow #3, Filezilla #4, 1999 wants all the other apps back.

Make a word processing document or spreadsheet:

Appleworks is discontinued, iWork should be #1 or #2.

Do some basic photo editing/organizing:

iView Media Pro was bought by Microsoft so yeah, you can pretty much kiss the Mac version goodbye.
Maybe you could remove the “basic” and mention Lightroom 2 and Aperture 2 in addition to the others? GraphicConverter link is dead.

Chat with someone online or video chat:
Skype should be listed (#3 or something like that), Fire is discontinued, Proteus link is broken. new one is: http://www.proteusx.org/

Browse the web in style:

Firefox should be #2, Netscape is now Seamonkey, Flock should be added.

Backup files/restore files/clone a drive:

Time Machine should be #1 since the posting mentions plenty of other built in applications. Retrospect link is dead.

Desktop Publishing:

Macromedia FreeHand is dead. remove.

Web Publishing:

Adobe GoLive is dead, Panic Coda is missing (and should be #1)

Pro-Level Font Management:

Linotype FontExplorer X missing

In addition to olePigeon’s list above:

Expandrive - allows users to mount SFTP shares in the Finder

it is similar to MacFusion, just a whole lot faster and reliable in my experience. YMMV.)

And last but not least I think it would be a good idea to mention http://osx.iusethis.com/ along with macupdate/versiontracker/apple.com

(I wish vB would implement a wiki-like system for threads like this)

Hi,

www.applemacfreeware.come is the largest source of free mac software on the net and is there purely for Mac users who want to find free software without sifting through Shareware and Trial downloads.

All of the Applications on your thread that are completely free i/e Freeware/Open source are listed on the site with the exceptions of some Open Source Apps which are not longer supported on the Mac platform.

Would it be possible to put this as a number 4 on your list of "So where do I download these Freeware, Shareware, and/or Updates:"

I see that NeoOffice is included under "feeling geeky"/open source applications, but it seems to me that NeoOffice or OpenOffice would be better placed simply under word processing/office software, particularly since OpenOffice is now a native OS X app. Running OpenOffice or NeoOffice doesn't require any more tech savvy than Microsoft Office, IMO.

Awesome list! Being an audio guy, I would add "Audacity" to the list, since it's FREE as opposed to Logic's hefty price tag.

It's also in no way comparable.

(Good app, to be sure! But that's like comparing a hacksaw to the price of a fully decked-out toolshed - if all you need is a hacksaw, good, but really… Also, Logic Studio by all rights should be the $5000 it used to be, so the "hefty price tag" is kind of a laugh, really.)

No, I'm a student in Wales, and Come on, you just replied like what, 2 mins away, I doubt you even tried the program.....
I tried the software from macupdate, and it only took me around £20 for student license to get the product. Also, I really think it works great with my Pdfs, and my assignments.
Anyway, I'm just saying some ppl will like its designs, especially the academic or business users.

You never were a student yourself? Students tend to go out on Wednesdays evenings late until morning brakes, and then need to go to bed, in order to have a quick power nap, before attending classes geography...well, you know, the study where calculating time is not practised anymore, and where they certainly have no clue about Greenwich Mean Time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and therefor have no idea why there is a difference of 32 minutes between 08.39 and 09.11 instead of 2 minutes.
