I think they corrected the camera shake, and that's why those borders are there.

one thing that went through my head while watching it again was, how could someone on the streets NOT notice a gym bag with a hole cut in the front for a camera and not see the camera?

It was a 200 x 300 meter block of homemade buildings that 50,000 people lived in with no laws, police, tax or government interaction smack bang in the middle of one of the most modern cities in the world.

What's not to like?

I'm currently living about 5mins away from it. I too don't see the fuss about this video. The area wasn't too bad, not as bad as the ghetto in a lot of countries. But it surely doesn't justify the bad and ugly of that part of the city.

The whole area was destroyed about 13 years ago; I was there when it was surrounded by metal fences and eventually demolished.

Moonmonkey - take the West Rail up to Kam Tin and check out Kat Hing Wai the famous walled village in the New Territories. It is small version of the Kowloon Walled City.
