Have you tried booting in Safe mode (hold Shift on boot)? And, did anything happen with the iMac before the slowdown?

You're running developer beta operating system and are running into problems?

If Apple's developer forums can't help you out (anybody who could is under NDA elsewhere), then reformat the entire drive and reinstall from scratch.

Have a look in system preferences and check that you have a startup disc specified. Not specifically selecting the internal boot drive can slow startup quite dramatically, resulting in huge lags between grey screen and the Apple logo appearing. Given that 10.8 is still early beta this clay may be even longer than normal.
