I donated.
When I tried to view the PDF in Firefox with the PDF Viewer plug in, my system immediately started swapping out and I was dumped back into the log-in screen after a few minutes. Now I'm trying it in Preview and it's still taking forever. Jeez, this thing must be hefty!
Edit: Even Preview can't handle it on my machine. Can anyone actually view this file?
Edit 2: It turns out that only Acrobat Reader doesn't crash my machine when viewing this file. Whodathunkit?

Not a bad ad, but I'd like to see a follow-up playing up the advantages a bit more.

Yeah, I can see it quite easily, but I saved it to my desktop -- didn't even try viewing it in the browser. IMHO, Adobe's browser plug-in is no good (at least the Windows version.)

So it took my RevC 12" PB a few minutes to load via Preview.
I had to turn off a number of programs to allocate more available memory for the damn file.
I guess there is much detail on that page...
geez...........
EDIT||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I actually never opened up that file using preview, I shut it down as it was taking way to long...
used Acrobat instead, and it opened up instantly...

I donated as well. So it's on today's NY Times, right?
Too bad, the names are not searchable. I used Adobe Reader 6.0.2 to view it and I found my name on the last 5th row.

Found you.
But the line was split between your first and last name.
And yeah, Acrobat read that PDF a hell of a lot faster than Preview was. Preview was bringing my system to its knees.

Big-ass is right. On my system, Preview grew its virtual memory space to at least a gig before I killed it, and it took some time to even manage to do that because of all the swapping. I never thought I'd see the day where Adobe Reader opened a PDF file much faster than Preview... what the hell?

i think what they are going here for is "piqueing interest" and curiosity of people to go to the website which will explain everything
i hear ya on listing advantages but i think this approach is more clever and better suited to the medium.

Cool looking in the png posted in the first post, but that pdf is massive... Im downloading adobe reader 'cause preview was making my computer run slower than virtual pc 5... (thats really bad, in case you haven't used VPC5). I had deleted adobe reader thinking I will never use it with an amazingly fast app like preview....

PB12+512MB RAM - took about 20 seconds.
I wonder what the difference is?

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

That's really weird. I'm on an iBook G4 800MHz with 640MB RAM. I tried this twice, and once was after a reboot, so it's not like my RAM was already full.

Preview.app just couldn't handle some PDF files as good as the Adobe Reader 6.0.x. Sometimes, preview.app refused to open .pdf files. Waiting for preview.app in Tiger.

RevC 768MB RAM
Just for kicks I tried launching the file after a reboot, with no apps running...
Launched Preview, and Disk Monitor, and tried to open the friggin file, virtual memory went up to 2.5 gigs before I decided to kill the app.... (this took about 15 minutes to get to 2.5 gigs...)....
WTF?

Probably using Adobe Reader. Yes, we already know the pdf file displays properly in that app.

Something's wrong with your Preview. It opened in about 15 seconds on my Beige G3.
I'm still running 10.3.4, though. Maybe it's a bug in 10.3.7.

While the ad is cool, the fact that (the new?) Preview can't handle it trumps it as far as something to talk about.
I let it sit for 5 min trying to open on my 1GHz iBook with 768MB RAM. It used up the 500+ MB RAM i had free and caused hundreds of thousands of pageouts, all while maxing out my cpu usage.
I wish I had an old install of OS X to boot from now, to test.

I waited about a minute or two for it to open in Preview then force quit and finally opened it in Acrobat. I have a PowerBook G4 1.25GHz with 1.25GB of RAM. To the people who can actually open the file what OS are you running and what version of Preview? 10.3.7 and 2.1.0 (v211) for me.
