Canceling a domain name

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the point in canceling a domain name. Why not let it expire? Its not like you'll be getting anything back.
I was poking around godaddy looking at my domains and noticed the option cancel the domaint. I'm not seeing the usefulness of this feature.

I guess cancellation allows them to resell it more quickly. No benefit to the former owner, though.

Yeah, I'm not seeing any benefit for an owner. There's plenty of proxy services that will mask your personal data from whois so this mitigates Mithras' point somewhat.
I'm not looking to do it, but rather I question its value.
