I've got you all beat.

My first Mac was a 512K. Can't remember whether it was the standard "Fat Mac" or the 512Ke. At some point I think my dad applied some super weird hacky upgrade that gave it the guts of a Plus. It had an external floppy disk that made the loudest noises, it sounded like a tiger growling. Good times, good times. Unfortunately the screen eventually stopped working, and I think it got recycled not long after that.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I still have mine. Really. Bought it for our son when he started school. It is hard to beat an abacus for teaching basic arithmetic.

Wow, I actually have one of the oldest accounts in this thread... I loved these forums in the early '00s. I was sad when MacNN proper died. This was the place to be to talk about the new world of Mac OS X. I think "snappy" was invented here. No other Mac site has ever quite had the same community for me as existed in the early '00s here. But maybe that has more to do with Apple going mainstream. Now I'm mostly over at MacRumors.

Oh and our first Mac was a Mac LC that my dad bought at work in 1990.

I didn't think an Apple ][e would count. We got one of those second hand. It was weird that the Apple ][ word processor had spell check when MS Word on the Mac didn't.

Anyone else remember printing banners on the tractor feed paper?

Oh, yeah… there was some program that did it. By Brøderbund or something.

Everyone running for student council in high school used it.

Oh yeah, my dad printed off a bunch of banners to hang up around school, we kids had to color all of the words in with markers.

Was it Print Shop?

Kinda weird to think this is what I was doing in early high school, and had transitioned to actual “desktop publishing” by the end.

I remember the banner software too. My first printer was an Oki dot matrix beast that was equipped with tractor-feed sprockets. It was perfect for printing banners…except that I couldn’t afford the software. I missed all the fun.

You could have still made banners just not printed them! thats what my high school work did for birthday cards, 6 pages of printer paper still perfed together.

Downside of that job was ripping perf edges off of 300 reports every month and stuffing envelopes.

In high school I would have helped you with the mailing labels because stickers are awesome.

Plus, I knew that trick where you stick the short end of a whole row on the edge of the table.

The trick was to rip the edges off 10 sheets at at a time while they were still folder up.

My account is old enough to drive and I'm still a noob.

The had ][es will Number Munchers at my school. I didn't hop on the bandwagon until the graphite iMac DV SE and Powerbook G3 (Lombard), which were each a few years old when I got them.

I got an ImageWriter II (instinctively capitalised that as "iMageWriter" and had to go back) WITH the sheet feeder (!) along with the used SE. *So* lucky.

My college got two Mac 512s in my second year. Everyone in my department (Graphic Design - yes, embrace the future!) ignored them but I used to love playing with the ability to manipulate type.
I wrote my dissertation on one which I stored on a single floppy. The idea of backing up was probably not a thing at that point. Thankfully it held up until it was printed out.
After that I went to a Mac IIx which was a total beast!

When I was doing graphic design in college in the early 90s, a significant portion of a bunch of classes was teaching us how to use Macs, or time in the computer lab to work on assignments.

At some point I just stopped showing up.

My cat, Lucky (RIP) used to tear ass from wherever he was in the house, even from a dead sleep in the basement, and attempt to SWAT and KILL a Panasonic dot-matrix print head every time we used it.

Oh, and if you like dot-matrix, I used to have a Tandy daisy wheel printer that required no drivers.

I don't. They'd rape you over things you could get for pennies online. Oh you want a 9v battery connector? That will be $4.99 please. Oh, you're confused about something? Yeah we hired someone just out of high school that doesn't know anything, sorry. Fuck Radioshack.

This, exactly. I can’t count the number of times I educated a sales dude there on basic electronics - especially after they shifted their focus toward cell phones. But if you even had a clue about what you needed, there was usually someone who knew their inventory, if not electronics, who could help you out.

I patronized Radio Shack quite a bit when I was younger. There was some lasting value in the purchases - I still have a few things from RS. Along with good memories of the place.

However, it appears I threw out their last annual catalog a few years back.

Sad but true.

I still have several RS “Engineer’s Mini Notebooks” that provide solid technical information on a variety of subjects. My favorite is the book on the ubiquitous 555 timer chip, written by Forrest Mims III - who lives in Central Texas, and still does quite a bit of atmospheric research here.

whoa, hello folks. just stumbled across the forums and managed to guess my old password on the first try. looks like my account isn't quite 20 years old, but does have some posts from back in the day about updating Jaguar on the TiBook... that beautiful machine was my pride and joy -- for about a year, until I dropped it and broke the hinges miss that machine.

I've been working on some other "old" machines lately; my original bondi blue iMac last fired up a few years ago, now it doesn't power on at all and i'd really like to get it running again.

Is there a way to have an old account from 2000 unbanned? I don't recall why it was banned but I was feeling nostalgic for these forums after a decade being away and I'd love to join in again.

Sucks to see S.J’s passing, but in many ways we see the revival of Newton, and the Knowledge Navigator in the iPhone.

Looking forward to another 20 years on MacNN Forums!

As of last month I‘ve officially become a member of the 20-year club, too. It is amazing to think that I‘ve been here half of my life! :mind_blown:

Edit: I just realized we are in the year of 2022, so I have missed my 20-year anniversary not by a month but by 13 months. Decay has set in already, I guess …

I lurked for a loooong time before I actually joined. I also posted as a guest for awhile.

What brought me here was this seemed to be the best place to find discussion about worthwhile OSX native software.

My claim to fame is I think I was the one non-mod/staff who was awake and reading when Zimph had his final nuclear meltdown.

I’m the first one to go to bat for users here, and I like Zimph, but the perma was way warranted. He threatened to leak the mod lounge or whatever it’s called.

What is it called by the way?
